The focus of this project was to create a program that encourages families to work together with the school, specifically to aid in the literacy development of their children. The project implements reading comprehension strategies with an emphasis in first grade. The project concentrates on encouraging parent involvement in the literacy development of their children through two workshops and Home Literacy Bags. The workshops and literacy bags were developed to increase the families' comfort and ability to communicate with their children's educators and to assist in reading with their children at home. The purpose of this project is to create a partnership with the author's students and their parents in the area of reading. This project is the development of a parent handbook with state and district reading frameworks as well as a curricular project for home use. The purpose of the project was to provide primary teachers with a multicultural literature resource book. To accomplish this a review of literature was completed to investigate the need for, and value of using multicultural literature within a primary classroom. How to judge quality multicultural literature was also reviewed. The project consisted of general lesson plans to use with multicultural literature, twenty specific activities to use with multicultural literature, and annotated book lists of multicultural literature. The purpose of this project was to develop a teacher's handbook to aid in reading instruction for students grades K-3 who are learning English as their second language. To accomplish this purpose a review ofliterature was conducted on the topics of second language acquisition, second language reading, and the use of multicultural literature. Additionally, information and materials from selected sources were obtained and analyzed.
