Professing American Literature: A Report From Brazil, Arnold Gordenstein
Professing American Literature: A Report From Brazil, Arnold Gordenstein
New England Journal of Public Policy
This American professor discovered that although his Brazilian students appeared to be entirely receptive to American literature, they were often culturally blocked from the concepts the books contained. He also found that some key American ideas don't translate well into Brazilian culture and that it is nearly impossible for a professor abroad to present literature in a politically and culturally neutral way.

Occasional Paper Series on Non-Governmental Organizations
This paper traces the role of NGOs in development, modernization and capitalism in Indonesia. It offers a typology of alternative NGO structures and paradigms which allows NGOs to transform development, involve people and create a counter-hegemonic movement.
The past two decades have witnessed a tremendous increase in the number of NGOs operating in the Third World. In 1981 Development Cooperation Review estimated that as many as 8,000 well-established NGOs were engaged in relief and development work worldwide. These organizations were providing US 3.6 billion in annual support to development programs, two thirds of which came from private sources. This constitutes …

Content-Based Approaches And Second Language Instruction, Pi-Chu Su
All Graduate Projects
Integration of content-based instruction into an English curriculum based on communicative goals is suggested to better solve the problems of materials and syllabus design in Taiwan. Historical antecedents and the rationales for content-based instruction are reviewed to illustrate a modern perspective on the interwoven relationship between language and content learning. The project proposes a three-year content-based English program for Taiwan's elementary and preschool students. A first year curriculum and model lessons for mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts are presented.

The primary objectives of the booklet are to help teachers develop confidence in taking students abroad; to promote the "know before you go" mentality; and to provide an information resource. Among the nearly 100 topics covered are the following: itinerary; airport check-in; menus; post office; insurance; …

The previous research into student background factors influencing reading achievement beyond the initial stages of schooling is reviewed and the research questions are operationalised. This is followed by a description of the data set employed to investigate the research questions. The underlying conceptual framework from which a model of individual student …
