Meeting The Demand For Accountability: Case Study Of A Teacher Education Program In China, Tak Cheung Chan

Faculty and Research Publications

To meet the demand for accountability, a teacher education program in a university located in South China has established processes at the college, the program, and the faculty levels to assure its program quality. Highlights of the processes are: involvement of stakeholders and the examination of program effectiveness. Although much has been done to help program candidates succeed, more effort is needed in the areas of program assessment and continuous improvement to assure program quality. An accountability implementation plan, a beginning teacher mentoring program, and a comparative study of beginning teacher performance were recommended to further enforce its strategies toward …

Strengthening A Global Perspective On Andragogy: An Update For 2009, John A. Henschke Edd

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

Andragogy has received mixed reviews in the past. Some have analyzed it from a positive perspective. Some have analyzed if from a negative perspective, and some have ignored it altogether. Most of the discussions have limited their observations to how Malcolm S. Knowles addressed andragogy. There has been as inadequate investigation of the foundation and background of andragogy from a world perspective. This research presents 290 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy that may help provide a clear and understandable international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory, and practice of andragogy. Six …

Examining The Challenges Of Teaching For Social Justice In Sarajevo, Brian Kirby Lanahan, Peter Mcdermott Oct 2009

Examining The Challenges Of Teaching For Social Justice In Sarajevo, Brian Kirby Lanahan, Peter Mcdermott

NERA Conference Proceedings 2009

Social justice is a critical principle of democracy. Societies seeking to become democratic must infuse social justice issues into their schools. In this qualitative study the researchers examined the extent to which social justice is being taught in Sarajevo’s educational system. With only a few exceptions, the findings indicate that education in Sarajevo has not reformed since the 92-95 conflict. Instead, Sarajevo’s curriculum has become more fragmented and less multicultural, and its schools are not preparing children to think democratically and work for social justice. Unless educational reforms accelerate, there is a real danger that the country may return to …

Global Learning Through Partnered Inquiry, Rebecca Hovey

Lewis Global Studies Center Staff Publications

The emergence of Global Learning associated with the internationalization of U.S. higher education signals a convergence of international/global studies and international education with the potential to dramatically innovate and transform the academy. Over the past decade the original aim of international education to foster intercultural understanding has become linked with the aims of international studies to enhance our knowledge of the world, and in particular, the ways in which new knowledge is created through non-western epistemologies and cultural perspectives. This paper seeks to situate the emerging discourse and initiatives around global learning in an understanding of the transformation potential of …

Fernando De Azevedo E A Questão Da “Raça Brasileira”: Sua Regeneração Pela Educação Física [Fernando De Azevedo And The Issue Of The “Brazilian Race”: Regeneration Through Physical Education], Karl M. Lorenz, Ariclê Vechia

Education Faculty Publications

Influenciado pelas ideias …

Learning For Life At Escola Comunitária Luiza Mahin: Integrating Classroom And Community Experiences In A Neighborhood’S Mission For Social Change, Alexa K. Catao

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Traditional authoritarian-based education practices are arranged in an oppressive structure—one which sees students as sterile receptacles whom should be rid of as much subjective interpretation of the deposited material as possible. This paper is an ethnographic and participatory-observatory study of a school which, contrary to this oppressive system, prioritizes and celebrates the complex personal identities of its members. Born of a local social movement to provide the systematically-marginalized population with pre-primary education, Escola Comunitária Luiza Mahin in Uruguai, Bahia strives to create conscientious, active, and informed future citizens through liberatory education. The educators at this school utilize an integrative approach …

Disparities In The System: The Effects Of Free Primary Education (Fpe) On The Quality Of Education In Nairobi’S Public Schools, Adrienne Chuck

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In 2003, the Kenyan government implemented Free Primary Education on a nation-wide scale. Since then, the policy has received both support and disapproval from the public. Although many analyses have examined the impacts of FPE on a nation-wide or district scale, minimal research has been done on how the policy has affected schools with different social and political characteristics. This study aims to look at how FPE has impacted schools’ learning environments and how those impacts influence the academic performance at these schools. From this information, the research determines whether or not the educational quality of these institutions has suffered …

Learning Initiatives for Rural Education

Recognition Of Prior Learning In Irish Culinary Arts, Dermot Seberry Jan 2009

Recognition Of Prior Learning In Irish Culinary Arts, Dermot Seberry

Other resources

The emerging agenda for higher education (HE) in Europe promotes lifelong learning, social inclusion, wider participation, employability and partnership working with community organisations. Consequently, higher education authorities are increasingly recognising the significant knowledge, skills and understanding which can be developed as a result of learning opportunities found at work through individual activities and personal interests. The accreditation of learning and prior achievement is now one of the central functions of the Higher Education Authority (HEA, 2007). In exercising this function, higher education providers are increasingly considering how learning that has taken place in a range of contexts, may be assessed …

Hungary And The United States: A Comparison Of Gifted Education, Julianna Connelly Stockton Jan 2009

Hungary And The United States: A Comparison Of Gifted Education, Julianna Connelly Stockton

Mathematics Faculty Publications

There is a lot that can be learned about a country based on the programs and provisions it has for mathematically talented students. While it is difficult to identify a single U.S. "program" or "approach" for gifted education, in general the trend is to put mathematically talented students through the standard mathematics sequence, just starting at an earlier age. In Hungary, on the other hand, the focus is on enrichment over acceleration. This paper explores how some very different historical, cultural, and political forces have shaped these two countries’ different approaches to educating mathematically talented students.

La Producción Intelectual En Las Universidades Privadas Venezolanas, Gus Gregorutti

Faculty Publications

Over the last 30 years, throughout the Latin America region, there has been an increasingnumber of private higher education institutions. This trend has brought both sometensions with the existing and dominant models of tertiary education and, from the otherside, the new governmental demands to allow these new players to be fully recognizedin society. One of these requirements is research productivity as a defining feature forhigher education. Venezuela is not an exception. Governments are asking privateuniversities to produce knowledge in order to be accredited and recognized within thenational system of universities. However, many of these private institutions are notready and don’t …
