Finding Leadership For The Internationalization Of U.S. Higher Education, Michael Smithee

The internationalization of U.S. higher education has depended on leadership from a variety of sources in different strengths and purposes over time. The leadership shifted from President Lyndon Johnson's sponsorship of legislation, as part of a trilogy of legislation known as the Great Society, to a collaborative and at times competitive leadership marked by a struggle to establish international education as legitimate focus for higher education institutions. Leadership came in the form of advocates for international education who were drawn from the stakeholders. U.S. Classroom Culture addresses issues of the American classroom for international students coming to the U.S. for study, as well as to acquaint faculty, teaching assistants, and international office staff of the problems international students may face in the U.S. classroom. These issues include but are not limited to: academic rules and policies, standards, expectations of U.S. faculty, variation in teaching and learning methods, American student perceptions of the classroom, grading, tests, terminology, and plagiarism.

This chapter applies a crisis management plan to a specific type of crisis: the death of an international student. It explores the crisis from the view of accidental death, murder, and suicide. It identifies the stakeholders: institutional, community, and agrieved. It reviews specific actions that can be taken to reach a closure of the crisis.
