The Ethics And Philosophy Of Outdoor Education: Hidden Lessons Within The Leikskoli Curriculum In Isafjordur, Iceland, Cici Conroy

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Icelandic curriculum structures itself amongst six pillars: “literacy, sustainability, health, and welfare, democracy, and human rights, equality and creativity” (Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, 2014). The United States national standards for their state public schools focus on two central points: math and English language learning (Participant 6, personal communication, 2022). The way these structures are upheld reflect values, goals, and systems of knowledge. Depending on where a child is raised, the skills learned in the classroom will result in a completely different attitude toward environment, place, and success. In the United States, success seems to be defined by …

Women In The Religious Wave Of Terrorism And Beyond: The West Versus The Rest An Analysis Of Women’S Motives And Agency In Al-Qaeda And The Islamic State, Regina Blaskie

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

As terrorism expands and changes in this globalized world, women’s involvement in terrorist groups remains to be an object of fascination, particularly Western women who choose to join terrorist groups in the Middle East. This paper aims to reveal and analyze the motivations that women have for joining terrorist groups, without merely labeling them as delusional or misguided by men. While it is true that women have roles in many different terrorist groups, this paper chooses to focus solely Al-Qaeda and largely the Islamic State as they (and increasingly the Islamic State) are extremely important for today’s global security. Furthermore, …

The Role Of Occupational Therapy In Implementing Inclusive Education In A Residential Care Facility: A Case Study, Erica Steinhoff

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

South Africa has been in the process of implementing inclusive education since 1996, and recent research has emphasized that strong education support services are needed to achieve inclusive education. In order to better understand the role that occupational therapy plays in implementing inclusive education, I explored how occupational therapy intersects with the implementation of inclusive education at Lungisisa Indlela Village (LIV), a residential care facility for orphaned and vulnerable children with approximately 200 children in Verulam, South Africa.

I conducted a case study by engaging in participant observation in everyday activities around the village with the children, conducting informal interviews …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Special Education: A Comparison Between Special Education In Bali And In America, Jacey Ann Dold

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In America, education is very highly valued. America believes that everyone has the right to education. Traditionally, students complete about 12 years of primary education before they continue on to college and then possibly graduate school. However, in Indonesia, specifically Bali, education is not seen as anything that should take priority over any other activity. Now lets shift the focus into a more specific kind of learning: special education. Special education for special needs people is a progressing teaching system that is continuously being developed in both Indonesia and America.

This paper will attempt to assess the special education systems …

The Costs Of Class: Private Schooling, Parental Choice, And Class Aspirations Among Kathmandu’S Working Poor, Andrew Chen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Over the last two decades, the ‘de facto’ privatization of educational services has emerged as a significant policy trend in Nepal’s educational sector; however, unlike earlier decades when private schools catered exclusively to the privileged classes, the expansion of low-cost ‘budget’ private institutions have begun to serve lower socioeconomic and marginalized classes of the population. This project examines parental perceptions and decisional contexts surrounding the choice of private school for children f the working poor in Kathmandu. Specifically, the study uses the lens of class to explore the rationale, anxieties, and aspirations of working poor parents as they navigate the …

La Derecha Contemporánea En Chile: Su Rol En El Movimiento Estudiantil, Alexandra Jane Bellows

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This investigation studies the political right in Chile and how they see their role within the student movement of 2011. One of the most relevant topics in current Chilean politics, the student movement has organized, over the course of the past nine months, a series of strikes, protests and demonstrations, rallying at certain times over 100,000 people. The students are demanding change to the structure of the higher education system, a system established during the 1980’s under the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet and largely influenced by the neoliberal model of Milton Freidman and the “Chicago boys.” This movement has …

La Educación De Sordos En España Deaf Education In Spain, Jaclyn Terrio

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

I had the good fortune to be able to volunteer with deaf students at the Centro Ave Maria San Cristóbal high school in the Albayzin, close to my own school. Every Tuesdays and Thursdays I would enter the classroom and spend time with Cecilia, the director of the Deaf Program, and Anabel, a twenty year old hardworking student. I met about ten deaf students in all, and spent substantial time with three of them. My father is deaf and my mother is an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, so for this reason whenever I came to Spain I wanted to …

Throughout the course of the semester, I had the opportunity to work at La Ciudad de Los Niños, a facility devoted to bettering the lives of children living in Granada, Spain. I chose to write about this topic because of the positive influence it had on my learning, both culturally and linguistically. I gathered the content of my paper solely through my experience working there, through formal and informal interviews with workers and students, and by using the facility’s website. In keeping a work journal, I was able to monitor my language growth and document different facts about the Ciudad …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Learning For Life At Escola Comunitária Luiza Mahin: Integrating Classroom And Community Experiences In A Neighborhood’S Mission For Social Change, Alexa K. Catao

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Traditional authoritarian-based education practices are arranged in an oppressive structure—one which sees students as sterile receptacles whom should be rid of as much subjective interpretation of the deposited material as possible. This paper is an ethnographic and participatory-observatory study of a school which, contrary to this oppressive system, prioritizes and celebrates the complex personal identities of its members. Born of a local social movement to provide the systematically-marginalized population with pre-primary education, Escola Comunitária Luiza Mahin in Uruguai, Bahia strives to create conscientious, active, and informed future citizens through liberatory education. The educators at this school utilize an integrative approach …

The Ministry of Education and Training has since embarked on the compilation of a number of policy proposals, education laws, and resolutions to clearly articulate the series of changes that need to occur. Presently Vietnam rests on the edge of a recent history of spectacular economic growth and on the brink of uncertainty in regards to future developments. In order to help sustain economic growth and development, the knowledge base of …

Disparities In The System: The Effects Of Free Primary Education (Fpe) On The Quality Of Education In Nairobi’S Public Schools, Adrienne Chuck

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In 2003, the Kenyan government implemented Free Primary Education on a nation-wide scale. Since then, the policy has received both support and disapproval from the public. Although many analyses have examined the impacts of FPE on a nation-wide or district scale, minimal research has been done on how the policy has affected schools with different social and political characteristics. This study aims to look at how FPE has impacted schools’ learning environments and how those impacts influence the academic performance at these schools. From this information, the research determines whether or not the educational quality of these institutions has suffered …

Women’S Literacy In Ngaoundéré, Cameroon, Brianne Carpenter

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper will be a look at adult women’s literacy specifically in Ngaoundéré, Adamaoua, Cameroon. I will begin by placing Cameroon’s illiteracy rates into a global context. I will then define what literacy is, why it is essential to development, how it benefits women particularly, and what women are affected and why. This will be done through a combination of scholarly research and interviews with women participants of the project of “Les Femmes Royales du Lamidat.” I hope to create a setting and a face of one of development’s most pressing issues by letting the women’s words speak for themselves. …

Aprender Sin Educación: El Aprendizaje, La Historia Personal Y El Contexto Comunitario En La Experiencia De La Universidad De La Tierra, Leah Oster-Katz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

“To Be A Doctor” The Hopes And Aspirations Of The Children Attending Namu Elementary School, And The Obstacles That Block Their Paths To Obtaining Them., Lauren Burke

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

“Our village, Namu”. The children, some hesitant, others eager, all proud, bring forth pictures they have drawn of their hometown. In the children’s minds and through the crayons provided them, flowers sprout up next to streams, and birds fly in the sky. Almost every drawing includes a home with semicircle interloping plaster tiles for the roof. Fish swim in the rivers and a few suns contain smiley faces. First impressions of visitors to the town or school , may be similar. The pavement street leading from the village to the larger city abruptly stops and turns into dirt road at …
