The two-year community college has become one of the major institutional configurations in the American postsecondary system. It has undoubtedly increased both the access to higher education and the social mobility of numerous individuals whose education world otherwise have ended with high school (Cohen & Brawer, 1989; Nunley & Breneman, 1988). Albert Strem was an Austro-Hungarian immigrant who came to the United States in the late 1920's. After immigrating to the United States he learned English at night school while working as a waiter in various New York restaurants. During World War II he was drafted and was assigned to class T-159, H company 1210th S. T. U. at Fort Ontario to learn to read and write English. After the war he resumed working in the restaurant industry and began volunteering with the New York Police Auxiliary when it was established in the 1950's. The rate and extent of deforestation in the Philippines is phenomenal. It has been estimated that in 1934, 17 million hectares of the Philippines' 30 million hectares were covered in forest (Asian Development Bank, pp. 13-14.) This figure had dropped to 10.5 million by 1969, and by 1993 it stood at 5.7 million. If one looks at old growth forests, where there is the greatest diversity of animal, plant, and insect life, then the figures are even more stark: In 1934, there were 11 million hectares of old growth forest; in 1969, 4.7 million; and by 1993, the figure had …

Formal adult teacher model mentoring programs tend to have a predictable set of elements: policies, mentor selection procedures, mentor training activities, mentor role expectations, mentor-adult teacher matching, and secondary development relationships. Mentoring is an individualized, long-term, teaching/learning relationship between two people used to accomplish a variety of purposes. Yet, little evaluation has been conducted to determine its results, or the effectiveness of the current process, with an eye to making program improvements. A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Inquiry-Oriented Teaching With Traditional Teaching In The Maldives, K. Ibrahim-Didi

This thesis compares the effectiveness of an activity-based, inquiry oriented approach using simple, inexpensive, locally available equipment with a traditional approach, in enhancing student achievement and positive attitudes towards science in the Maldives. The sample consisted of 79 boys range from 13 to 16 years of age from two year eight classes in a private lower secondary high school. A quasi experimental non equivalent control group research design was adopted for the study.
