Gender Bias In It Hiring Practices: An Ethical Analysis, Harmony L. Alford
Gender Bias In It Hiring Practices: An Ethical Analysis, Harmony L. Alford
Student Scholarship – Computer Science
With the current movement to increase the number of women in STEM-related careers, modified IT hiring practices may be considered debatably unethical. Studies cited in this work have asserted that female representation in STEM fields is integral not only to encouraging continued progression toward gender equality in the workplace but also to creating more inclusive products. In turn, some argue that when faced with reasonably comparable female and male candidates, a hiring manager should select the female candidate in order to increase the female representation in the company and provide a female perspective. However, it is simultaneously debatably unethical and …
A Study Of The Perceptions Of Racial Equity In One Early Childhood Education Program, Dawn M. Meskil
A Study Of The Perceptions Of Racial Equity In One Early Childhood Education Program, Dawn M. Meskil
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although public education in the United States has had remarkable growth and improvement since its beginning, significant inadequacies concerning racial equity continue to cast a shadow on the system. Despite desegregation efforts and specific attention to providing integrated school settings there has been little progress in establishing educational justice. The purpose of this case study was to uncover perceptions about racial inequity within Asheville City Schools as well as potential facilitators of equity. A qualitative case study using 10 guiding research questions was conducted to evaluate the perceptions of parents as well as educators at Asheville City Schools Preschool regarding …
Growing Up With Hunters: An Insider's Perspective, Sudie Hofmann
Growing Up With Hunters: An Insider's Perspective, Sudie Hofmann
Human Relations and Multicultural Education Faculty Publications
Many of us who care about animals go about our lives while immersed in a world that is either not aligned with, or is even openly hostile to, our respect for animals. Sudie Hofmann is one of many people who grew up in a family that didn’t share her respect and compassion for animals. She shares her experience of what it’s like to grow up in a family of hunters.
Black Women's Search For Meaning: An Existential Portraiture Study On How Black Women Experience The 4 Existential Givens, Tamiko Lemberger-Truelove
Black Women's Search For Meaning: An Existential Portraiture Study On How Black Women Experience The 4 Existential Givens, Tamiko Lemberger-Truelove
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
The purpose of the phenomenological, qualitative study was to explore how select Black women experience the four ultimate concerns of existence, including freedom, isolation, meaninglessness, and death. Existential psychology, from which the four existential givens emerge, is deeply grounded in existential philosophy, which rarely connects key principles and tenets of existentialism to the experiences of Black women. The existential givens have been posited as a universal framework and yet because Black women are faced with multiple forms of marginalization the current study operates from the assumption that universal experiences are filtered through patently Black experiences. To explore how the existential …
Revolution And Education, Lilia D. Monzó, Peter Mclaren
Revolution And Education, Lilia D. Monzó, Peter Mclaren
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Denied the right to recognize patterns of violence and their relationship to class and specifically to the capitalist mode of production through an institutionalized historical amnesia, we live our lives as mere passengers on a train that stops at death’s door. In the self-proclaimed greatest super power, the United States, the mythical alliance to democracy serves to obfuscate its systematic plundering of life and earth in service to the transnational capitalist class. We have been brainwashed through state and corporate-sponsored lies, myth, and a national zealotry to forget and continue to repeat the atrocities of our past. We have been …
Protección De Los Niños Y Niñas Indígenas: El Caso Del Sename Y El Pueblo Mapuche En Chile / 90/5000 Protection Of Indigenous Children: The Case Of The Sename And The Mapuche People In Chile, Maxine Freedman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The rights of all children are guaranteed in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by the United Nations in 1989. This Convention guaranteed children the right not only to sufficient food, a place to live, and security, but also to a high quality education and political inclusion. Chile ratified the Convention in 1990, and it became the legal base for the work done by Chile’s child protection system, el Servicio Nacional del Menor (SENAME). The system administers sanctions for youth who have broken the law and intervenes when children have been victims of a violation of their …

Jules Verne Constructs America: From Utopia To Dystopia, Dana L. Radu
Jules Verne Constructs America: From Utopia To Dystopia, Dana L. Radu
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In my dissertation, I examine visions of the United States in Jules Verne’s (1828-1905) Voyages extraordinaires (1863-1905). Of the sixty-four novels that make up that series, twenty-three, over one-third, feature American characters or take place on American soil. I demonstrate that in his early novels (1863-1886), he presents the United States in an optimistic and utopian light, while in his later novels (1887-1905), his depictions of the United States take on a pessimistic and dystopian aspect. In also showing that Verne had been influenced by utopian socialists Henri de Saint-Simon (1760-1825), Charles Fourier (1772-1837) and Étienne Cabet (1788-1856), I provide …
