Barr arrived at UMaine with 15 years of assistant coaching experience in Division-I programs and a tradition of success at each of his stints at five different institutions. Prior to Maine, Barr spent five years at UMass as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, where he helped guide the Minutemen to a 94-75-10 record, including a 72-26-6 mark over his last three seasons. Last year marked the first time that a team was ever inducted into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame, with that same 1992-93 National Championship squad leading the way once again. The team - arguably the greatest team in the history of college hockey - went 42-1-2 en route to the national title.

After going unbeaten through the first 32 games of the season, the Black Bears dropped a 7-6 overtime contest on Feb. 19 to Boston University. That would be the only loss on the year, though, as the team reeled off 12-straight wins, including a 5-4 …

The 2007-08 men's ice hockey season was not a typical one for the University of Maine. Maine's string of nine consecutive NCAA appearances, second only to Michigan, was finally snapped. Gone were Josh Soares, Michel Leveille and Mike Lundin, players who had a hand in leading Maine to the NCAA Frozen Four in three of the past four seasons. In addition, the Los Angeles Kings (NHL) signed 2007 Hockey East Rookie of the Year, Teddy Purcell after just one season at Maine, leaving the Black Bears without seven of their top 10 scorers from 2006-07.

Consistently labelled the strongest conference from top to bottom, the Hockey East Association, encompassing 10 established Division-I hockey programs, celebrates its 22nd season in 2005-06. Hockey East has continued a steady rise to prominence since its founding charter on July 11, 1983, when the possibility of an apparent Ivy League break-off threatened the existence of the ECAC. In response, the Athletics Directors from Boston College, Boston University, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence announced the formation of a new Division I men's ice hockey conference. A long time in the making, the Women’s Hockey East Association proudly commenced official league play in the 2002-03 season. As women’s ice hockey steadily expanded from its original status as an emerging sport to its current status as an NCAA championship sport, it became apparent that Hockey East should seriously consider sponsoring a separate league to accommodate its five member schools that had varsity programs: Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern, and Providence. However, little got beyond the level of discussion and conjecture in the early stages as administrators remained unsure of how to undergo the transition process. The …

After beginning 15-1-2 a year ago, the University of Maine men's ice hockey team had a disappointing finish to the 2002- 03 season, losing to Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Black Bears will use that memory to inspire them as they take the ice in 2003-04. The squad learned valuable lessons down the stretch last year and enter the season with a fire to prove that the first half of last year was not a fluke.

To say the 2001-02 University of Maine ice hockey season was one of ups-and-downs will not do it justice. After losing legendary head coach Shawn Walsh to cancer less than 24 hours before the first scheduled practice, the Black Bears rebounded to come within 53 seconds of winning it's third national championship. However, the National Championship was not to be as Minnesota won the game in overtime. Last season, the University of Maine hockey team found out just how difficult it is to defend a national championship.

Following its near-perfect run to a 42-1-2 record and the school's first national championship in 1993, head coach Shawn Walsh and his Black Bears knew if UMaine was to become the first team to repeat as the nation's best since 1972 it would need solid efforts from many unproven players.

For 15 weeks last season, the University of Maine proved it deserved the pre-season accolades as best in the nation. But following a 3-2 loss to Michigan State at the East Regional in Providence, Maine's hopes for its first national championship were dashed.

In what is supposed to be a rebuilding year, head coach Shawn Walsh will need to find replacements for 1992 Hobey Baker Award winner Scott Pellerin and three time All-American Jean-Yves Roy, who opted to forgo his senior season and sign with the New York Rangers. One look at the credentials of the 1986-87 Maine hockey team gives you the impression that this is a program on the rise. Only a handful of NCAA teams can boast having 10 NHL draft picks on their roster, seven of which have been selected in the last two drafts.

The nucleus of the 1986-87 Black Bears is made up of underclassmen, as 19 players on the 28-man roster have yet to reach their junior year. "We are in the situation now where our predominant classes will be the freshmen and sophomores," says head coach Shawn Walsh.

The history of varsity hockey at the University of Maine can be divided into two eras. The first began shortly after the end of World War I when American college campuses were flooded with returning GIs. Varsity athletics in general were just beginning to return to their pre-war levels at most campuses when hockey as a college sport began a major resurgence across the country.

In the fall of 1922, several UMO students formed a group to petition the Athletic Board to add varsity hockey for the 1922-23 winter season . A generation earlier, in 1906-07, a club team had …

In just six short years, the University of Maine at Orono hockey program has experienced just about every up and down there is. Two years ago, the team qualified for the ECAC Division I playoffs after only two years in the league. Previous to that, Maine had qualified for the Division II East tournament in 1979 after only two years as a varsity. On the other side of the coin, after losing 15 players to graduation last year, the Black Bears slipped to an 8-21 record and a last place finish in the ECAC.
