Organizational Values, Social Responsibility, And Corporate Citizenship: The Case Of Nevada State College, Grace S. Thomson
Dr. Grace S. Thomson
Organizational Values, Social Responsibility, and Corporate Citizenship Organizations contribute more than products and services to the society. The generation of jobs, creation of wealth and satisfaction of needs are only a portion of the influence that organizations have in a community. Likewise, organizations are increasingly engaging in social responsible initiatives to respond to the concerns of their various stakeholders (Aguilera, Rupp, Williams, & Ganapathi, 2007). Organizations with a genuine interest for social responsibility and citizenship possess value systems that articulate and integrate these social motives into their corporate strategy (Graber & Kilpatrick, 2008). Higher education institutions in the United States …
The Professional Development Of Academic Librarians: How Should Institutions Contribute To The Process?, Gregory A. Smith
The Professional Development Of Academic Librarians: How Should Institutions Contribute To The Process?, Gregory A. Smith
Gregory A. Smith
Professional development is universally recognized in education and librarianship as imperative for ongoing effectiveness. Most—though not all—academic libraries support professional development through financial assistance and release time. However, while funding and release time are necessary to professional growth, they are not sufficient. The role of the leader as a steward of organizational culture suggests that academic library administrators should concern themselves with fostering an environment conducive to their subordinates’ professional development. Innovative professional development programs in place at a number of academic libraries stand as a corrective to the seemingly haphazard practices of many libraries and librarians. Further research on …

Ethics In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen

This presentation focuses on the following Robinson and Moulton quote found in the book "Ethical Problems in Higher Education": The myth that institutions of higher education are sheltered from the struggles and conflicts of the “real world” is widely accepted even by people who ought to know better—those of us in academic settings who confront, struggle with, bemoan, or try to ignore the serious ethical issues that arise. People outside academia may tease us about the ivory tower world and our innocence and naiveté. With a twinge of guilt, we in academia accept their teasing because the myth tells us …

International Exchanges And Collaboration: A Student Perspective, Ellen Mcmahon, Agata Kubis, Kinga Ogonowska, Dzenan Kulovic
Ellen McMahon
This initial exploration into student perceptions and desired outcomes of international student exchanges and collaboration provides a snapshot in time of the thoughts on two small groups of students: Polish students studying in Chicago, IL in the US and Bosnian students using technology to interact with an American professor in the US. This paper can provide discussion prompts to address the specific interests of students for those academics involved student exchanges as well as those using technology to link students beyond geographic boarders.

The Role Of Higher Education In Preparing The Next Generation Of Entrepreneurs: The Role Of Service Learning, Ellen Mcmahon
Ellen McMahon
What role does higher education have in preparing the next generation of entrepreneurs? How can curricula be adapted and organized to allow students to go beyond learning theory and formula to applying what they learn to real world situations? Is it possible to link learning to opportunities within the community to build stronger more enduring businesses that can compete locally, nationally or internationally? This paper will discuss a model of service learning that strategically embeds activities within the community in specific organizations/businesses. Students participate in real world problems and challenges thematically linked to the learning outcomes of their course. Business …

White Paper: Sexual Harassment And Assault Prevention Education Manual For Faculty And Staff Leaders, John D. Foubert, Christopher Kilmarting, Gail Stern
John D. Foubert
The curriculum for the SHAPE program at the United States Naval Academy was written and in accordance with the contractual terms made with and will be copyrighted by three independent consultants hired by the United States Naval Academy: Gail Stern, Christopher Kilmartin, and John Foubert. This manual was written with the intention of providing a document for USNA faculty and staff who were hired to take over the consultant’s responsibilities for program development and training. We will discuss philosophical issues undergirding the choices we made in writing the program sessions and in conducting the training for peer educators. By providing …

Ten Things Librarians Don't Want To Hear But Need To Know: A Dialog - Scelc Colloquim Iv, Gordon C. Tibbitts

The past decade has provided librarians with innumerable opportunities, changes, and, indeed, anxieties. From rapid technological changes to generational conflicts in the workplace to the current fiscal crisis, many librarians feel increasingly powerless to address the issues that confront their day-to-day challenges. In this presentation, two SCELC librarians from Generations X & Y will interview two industry veterans to reflect upon ten “difficult” realities that our profession will have to address in the coming decade if our profession is to continue to make a difference.

Mexican Higher Education At A Crossroads: Topics For A New Agenda In Public Policies, Jesús F. Galaz-Fontes, Manuel Gil-Antón, Laura E. Padilla-González, Juan J. Sevilla-García, Jorge G. Martínez-Stack, José L. Arcos-Vega
Jesús Francisco Galaz Fontes
After a period of unregulated growth from the 1960s to the late 1980s, public Mexican higher education came to be perceived as a "disaster zone" by the federal government. Starting at that point, several public policies seeking to improve its quality, social pertinence, efficiency and equity have implemented. While impacting positively Mexican higher education in many respects, such policies have had unintended negative effects and, it is contended, they are currently having diminishing gains. This paper identifies six topics that the next generation of public policies should consider if public Mexican higher education is to evolve into a stage in …

Assessment Strategies For Global Learning: Ii Case Studies, Meg O'Reilly, Kay Gibson, Deborah Gordon, Glyn Rimmington
Dr Meg O'Reilly
The processes of assessment have begun to take pride of place in considerations of online teaching and learning. As the technological means become more robust for bringing students together online, designs of various kinds of assessment tasks reflect greater reliance on the strategies of interaction, collaboration, cultural exchange and the use and creation of Web resources. Where students living in different countries study online, their sharing of culture and perspective and their development of communication skills can be considered as elements of global learning. Best practice in assessment of global learning outcomes is still emerging from action research, as described …
Using Cross-Disciplinary Action Learning Sets When Designing Online Assessment, Meg O'Reilly
Using Cross-Disciplinary Action Learning Sets When Designing Online Assessment, Meg O'Reilly
Dr Meg O'Reilly
The drive to find appropriate ways to integrate online technologies into assessment has come about within Australian higher education as a consequence of widely held aspirations to remain competitive in the global marketplace. An action research initiative at Southern Cross University reported in this paper suggests both extrinsic and intrinsic reasons why academics considering online assessment may or may not follow through with immediate implementation. More specifically, a crossdisciplinary action learning set in the case study presented has shown benefits in approaching educational design as a cyclical, collegial, creative and reflexive process for planning, implementing and evaluating online assessment.

The past twenty years have brought about a paradigm shift in higher education. During that time, we have changed our focus from what we want to teach to what students need to learn. The academy's position of unassailable authority has been usurped by public cries for transparency, accountability, quality assurance, and quality improvement. To cut expenses, and therefore deter the rising cost of postsecondary education, institutions have borrowed best business practices and started focusing on productivity, efficiency, and reallocating resources.
