Best Practices Of Exceptional College Professors Who Program Relevance Into Online Distance Learning Courses: A Phenomenological Study, Keri Ann Palasz
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this proposed transcendental phenomenological study was to describe specifically the experience of exceptional professors who convey relevance to students in online distance learning higher education courses. The theory that guided this study is Knowles’ Adult Learning Theory (ALT), as it clarifies the relationship between course design and delivery and the characteristics of adult learners. This study addressed four research questions posed to a sample of award-winning college professors who teach online distance learning courses in the American field of higher education to understand better what these professors do to convey relevance in a way that appeals to …
Writing To Learn: A Course Design And Educational Resources, Geoff Keston
Writing To Learn: A Course Design And Educational Resources, Geoff Keston
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Higher education students write in many courses, but often as only a small part of a class and without guidance about how to use writing to learn. This paper describes the design of a dedicated course, Writing to Learn, in which students practice many genres and study the science of learning. A focused approach to using writing as a way to learn aims to give students extensive and diverse practice, which isn’t done in many published case studies. And making ideas from psychology, neuroscience, and the theory of pedagogy a part of the course content shows students why and how …

Basic Communication Course Annual
The rapid transition to emergency remote teaching due to COVID-19 provides many lessons for how BCDs can design resilient basic course programs that will be prepared to adapt in any number of potential future emergencies. BCDs can design resilient courses by pre-planning how courses will maintain instructional continuity, pre-loading pivoting options into learning management systems, and adopting online texts that are accessible anywhere. BCDs can also build instructor resilience by providing high-quality training and providing continued support for instructor well-being.

SoTL Commons Conference
Concept-based teaching is an innovative pedagogy that allows for meaningful building and transfer of knowledge, especially in nursing education (Morse & Jutras, 2008). The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) has recently adopted in the concept-based approach in curriculum design with an aim to produce the next generation of nurses who can seamlessly transfer knowledge learned from their didactic experience to the bedside. In our poster board presentation, we will highlight the effectiveness of the innovative, concept-based teaching practices employed in Family in Nursing in an online setting. Our group utilized different techniques and modalities such as exemplars and gamification …

Cooking Up A Data Literacy Course, Claire Nickerson Mlis
Forsyth Library Faculty Publications
This asynchronous online course, Interdisciplinary Studies 815: Introduction to Data, was developed for graduate students in the information analysis and communication concentration of the Fort Hays State University master of liberal studies degree. The course is designed for professionals who need to make data-driven decisions such as educators, policy makers, and nonprofit employees. It is a survey course, so it does not go into great depth on any of the topics covered but rather provides a basic grounding for developing further data literacy skills. It exclusively uses zero-cost resources, including openly licensed content, library-licensed e-books and articles, and free online …

Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
The Agile Course Design Institute, created for faculty at a regional public university, utilized an agile thinking lens to model flexible, interactive learning. The Institute framework consisted of three core factors: sense of belonging, students’ bandwidth, and interaction and engagement. Faculty participated in online synchronous and asynchronous settings to develop agile courses. In doing so, they gained insights into the experiences their students might have in remote learning. Examples from the Institute and participant work are explored through a “Why” (purpose/outcome), “What” (connections to the ACDI framework), and “How” (tools and strategies) structure.
