Nursing Skills Video Selfies: An Innovative Teaching And Learning Strategy For Undergraduate Nursing Students To Master Psychomotor Skills, Cynthia Sterling-Fox, Julius P. Smith, Ophalyn Gariando, Pamela Charles

Publications and Research

Introduction: The quality of care for patients is linked to the performance and competence of nurses. Nurse educators are challenged to prepare graduates to deliver safe, competent, patient-centered care. Nursing skills video “selfie” is an innovative teaching and learning strategy in which nursing students use technology to create videos of themselves (video selfie) performing psychomotor skills.

Method: The instructional exercise of creating the video selfie was administered to a group of nursing students in a medical–surgical class. The laboratory instructors identified three psychomotor nursing skills. In the skills lab, the instructors showed videos to demonstrate how the skills were …

Experiential Learning And Teaching: One Epp’S Journey Facilitating Clinical Teaching During Covid-19, Beth A. Garcia, Betty Coneway

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Introduction

When circumstances change in the blink of an eye, educators are accustomed to monitoring and adjusting to do whatever it takes to help students be successful. Little did we know that the requisite skills of being nimble, flexible problem solvers would be stretched to the limit as educators around the world addressed the massive educational changes that occurred in response to the global pandemic. Through their commitment to following best practices in educator preparation and ongoing collaboration with many stake holders, the West Texas A & M University’s (WTAMU’s) Educator Preparation Program (EPP) faced the challenges of the COVID-19 …

Chicago Semester Experiential Learning Amid Covid-19, Rebecca Burwell, Jonathan Brooks, Mackenzi Huyser

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Excerpt

Chicago Semester is an experiential education program that was founded 45 years ago by six private, faith-based colleges in the Midwest. During the spring semester of 2020, we were serving 56 traditional-aged undergraduate students. These students came from 16 different colleges with student bodies between 1000-4000 students, mainly located in rural or suburban communities. On March 13, 2020, we made the decision to conclude our in-person programming because of COVID-19. Students moved home and the program continued remotely for the duration of the semester.

Teaching & Learning During Covid-19: Alternative Instructional Activities Through Individualized Learning Plans, Kerry Weir, Michelle Wohlman-Izakson, Lina Gilic

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 75 teacher candidates from SUNY Old Westbury were engaged in their Applied Learning Practicum in public schools across Long Island. Of those students, 18 were in the Exceptional Education and Learning Department. When the first teacher candidate was asked to leave her placement, faculty in the Exceptional Education and Learning Department pivoted to design an individualized learning plan for each teacher candidate to augment their clinical placement experience.

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Across the country, the struggles of universities for market-place relevancy and financial stability has worsened due to the shocks of the COVID-19 crisis. While institutional leaders are evaluating a variety of business models to determine the best options for operating in the “new normal” that will be both financially viable and safe for the campus community, professors are busy adapting their teaching approaches for mixed method delivery. We, interdisciplinary professors and students, argue that new experiential learning opportunities lead to personal growth and development and may be the key to enhancing students’ job readiness. Furthermore, these opportunities may lead to …

Structured Professional Development For Academic Developers: A Collaborative Approach, Fiona O'Riordan, Íde O'Sullivan, Mary Fitzpatrick, Margaret Keane, Claire Mcavinia, Angelica Risquez

Articles

This paper shares the experience of a group of academic developers’ engagement in collaboratively working towards the completion of an online open-access professional development (PD) course designed to support higher education teachers to engage with a new professional development framework. Committee members of the Educational Developers in Ireland Network set out to complete the course as a demonstration of their commitment to their own PD and to experience the process with a view to becoming facilitators of the course. An auto-ethnographic approach was used to capture this experience, and findings demonstrate an inspiring alternative to PD that supports academic developers …

Project-Based Learning: Lessons Learned With Teaching The Non-Communication Majors, Sarah Leblanc Jan 2020

Project-Based Learning: Lessons Learned With Teaching The Non-Communication Majors, Sarah Leblanc

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Family communication, as an upper-level communication course, attracts communication majors and students studying in other disciplines. As such, instructors employ pedagogies that appeal to both majors and non-majors. This essay reflects on how I used project-based learning (PBL) in a family communication course filled with mostly non-majors. The essay highlights my rationale for choosing PBL, provides an explanation of the PBL activity, describes how PBL addresses two key problems I experienced in teaching the family communication course, and offers conclusions regarding lessons learned.

Teaching And Learning Occupation In Occupational Therapy Education: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis, Mikaylah Miller, Melanie J. Roberts Jan 2020

Teaching And Learning Occupation In Occupational Therapy Education: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis, Mikaylah Miller, Melanie J. Roberts

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Occupation is the core focus of the occupational therapy profession and is a complex concept for students to know and understand. The aim of this review was to understand how teaching and learning occupation has been represented by educators and students across qualitative studies in occupational therapy education. A qualitative evidence synthesis was conducted which included searching four databases; CINAHL, Medline, Scopus, and Embase. Research articles were screened using inclusion and exclusion criteria by two reviewers. The search resulted in 328 records being identified, with 13 articles included. The methodological quality of included articles was assessed using the Critical Appraisal …
