Exploring Students’ Perceptions Of The Connection Between Personal Effort And Academic Performance, Kimberly Kinsey Mannahan, Jennifer P. Gray

The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between students’ perceptions of the link between personal effort and academic performance to promote effective pedagogy, contributing to the potential for increased retention/progression/graduation rates. Based on Treisman’s (2013) assertion that students do not connect hard work with success, the researchers hypothesized that students would fail to connect the level of effort (as measured by motivation, effort, attendance, attention/engagement, and reading the textbook) they invested in a course with performance in the course (as measured by expected course grade). The program will include 12-16 individual performances that span many genres of dance including Hip Hop, Jazz, Ballet, and Tap among others. This event provides both domestic and international students with an opportunity to teach, learn and share with one another through the art of dance. The International Dance Festival is hosted by the International Student Association and the Office of International Programs. The 2016 International Dance Festival will be held on Saturday, February 20 at the Collins Center of the Arts at 2 pm and 7 pm.

Urinetown is a satirical comedy musical that pokes fun at politics, greed, musical theater, and even its own name. It takes place in a world where water is so scarce that you have to pay to pee, and the rates keep going up. It opened on Broadway in 2001 and was nominated for 10 Tony awards and won three. UMaine's production of Urinetown will feature over 60 students, faculty, staff, and guest artists, and will take place in Hauck auditorium for seven performances.

Between September 2013 and January 2014, students and staff of the Technological University Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama and DIT Dublin School of Creative Arts collaborated on the creation of an opera production which was presented at the National Concert Hall on Jan 23rd. The project was implemented within the modular framework from both colleges. The collaboration was both multi and inter-disciplinary and the students engaged at a professional level, working under staff supervision and in tandem with personnel and resources outside the college environment. Violinist Richard Hsu is an active soloist and chamber musician. Richard has performed with Orchestra of St. Luke's, Clarion Society, Early Music New York, New York State Baroque Ensemble, American Classical Orchestra, and Concert Royal. He was formerly Associate Concertmaster with the Moscow Ballet at Spoleto Festival USA. He holds a performer diploma and bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from the Indiana University School of Music. He furthered his studies at Manhattan School of Music. The Impact Of Unionization On University Performance, Mark Cassell, Odeh Halaseh

This study examines faculty unions’ impact on the organizational efficiency and effectiveness of public four-year institutions of higher learning. The article theorizes the causal connections between faculty unions to higher education performance. The study also presents results of a cross-sectional time series analysis and a cross-sectional analysis of higher education performance using data from the Department of Education’s Integrated Post Secondary Data System (IPEDS) spanning more than two decades and over 430 public universities and colleges. We find support for the view that unionization improves organizational efficiency and effectiveness. At the same time the research raises important methodological and substantive …

Living-Learning Communities Improve First-Year Engineering Student Academic Performance And Retention At A Small Private University, William J. Palm, Charles R. Thomas

Living-Learning Communities (LLCs), in which students share a residence, one or more classes, and extracurricular activities, have been shown to improve first-year student engagement, academic performance, and retention in non-engineering fields. Research on Engineering LLCs has focused primarily on student engagement. Two studies to examine performance and retention found that LLCs had little effect on first-semester grades but increased first-year retention in engineering by 2 to 12%. Unfortunately, one of these studies did not control for differences in incoming student characteristics, and another used a comparison group that differed little from the LLC group, possibly causing them to understate the …
