Music And Perceived Stress: An Investigation Into The Effects Of Music On Chemistry Students' Perceived Stress Levels, Alice Young, Eric Malina

Honors Theses

Music has long been a prevalent intervention when trying to lower stress in certain populations (Thoma et al., 2013). This study aimed to explore the possible usefulness of music as an intervention for students experiencing stress in the chemistry laboratory setting. Students in general chemistry laboratories were surveyed regarding their stress at the ends of periods in which music was or was not played in their laboratory classes. While the results were not statistically significant, mean stress scores did lower in those groups where music was played. Music At Central Washington University With Emphasis On The Years 1891-2000, Norman D. Wallen

Music Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This history deals primarily with the period before the year 2000. Only four professors on current faculty predate 2000. Most of those four are scheduled to retire by 2025. I trust one or more are willing to write a detailed history of their years at Central. Other than the bound and on-line books of concert programs there is very little available information after 1998. They must rely primarily on memory. It is very difficult to write anything about CWU Music in this century because so little written documentation is available. (See ”Sources”) Former Director of Bands Larry Gookin is retired …

The Great Generalization: Organizational Adaptation Strategies As Entrepreneurship In Higher Music Education, Jacob Bruce Hertzog Jul 2022

The Great Generalization: Organizational Adaptation Strategies As Entrepreneurship In Higher Music Education, Jacob Bruce Hertzog

Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study sought to measure how higher music education has evolved in response to the music industry’s digital revolution. I utilized a framework of organizational adaptation theory to synthesize five distinct organizational adaptation strategies: decentralization, generalization, specialization, formalization, and inaction. Music leaders were surveyed (n = 100) to assess adaptations across ten common domains in higher education. Higher music education was found to have undergone a great generalization through the expansion of activities in nearly every domain. Consistent with elements of organizational adaptation theory, and like individual musicians, higher music education has been entrepreneurial in response to the digital revolution.

To What Extent Does The Implementation Of Student-Centered Assignments Increase Student Engagement, Agency, And Success In Mus 342 And Mus 343?, Haley Nutt

Backward by Design Mini-Studies

This brief essay explores the extent to which the implementation of student-centered assignments increases student engagement, agency, and success in MUS 342 and MUS 343. Beginning with descriptions of both courses and a few points regarding my own pedagogical philosophies, I discuss the premise and grading guidelines for an example student-centered assignment in MUS 342 titled “Personal Grove Encyclopedia Entry.” The write-up closes with a summary of what I hope my students can learn from the assignment initially, as well as how they can self-reflect on the assignment at the end of MUS 343 the following quarter.
