Faculty Publications

Dr. Zachary S. Ritter and Dr. Reshmi Dutt-Ballerstadt explore the challenges that faculty diversity workers face in institutions that are suffering from toxic whiteness.

This essay originally appeared as part of Conditionally Accepted, a career advice blog for Inside Higher Ed providing news, information, personal stories, and resources for scholars who are, at best, conditionally accepted in academe. Integrating Campus Partners Towards Equitable Open Educational Resources Adoption: A Case Study Of A California State University Affordable Learning Solutions Program At Humboldt State University, Kimberly Stelter, Kyle Morgan, Morgan Barker

HSU Library

The Humboldt State University (HSU) Library and HSU Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) collaborated with the campus’ own Accessibility Resource Center, Student Disability Resources Center, and Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through five training sessions, to facilitate the integration of open educational resources (OER) into the classroom. Faculty and students, from disparate disciplines, participated as equal stakeholders in the discovery and implementation of OER into a course, throughout a year-long immersive program.

This summary covers the history of the California State University (CSU) Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) OER program at Humboldt State University; the structure of the 2019-2020 …

Cgs Research And Policy Forum: Putting The Humanities Phd To Work, Katina Rogers Jun 2020

Cgs Research And Policy Forum: Putting The Humanities Phd To Work, Katina Rogers

Publications and Research

These slides are from a presentation to the quarterly CGS Research & Policy Forum. The forum featured Dr. Katina Rogers and her new book, Putting the Humanities PhD to Work: Thriving in and Beyond the Classroom (Duke University Press, 2020). The talk centers on the notion that career development is not a standalone issue. Rather, it is embedded in questions of equity, inclusion, evaluation, labor structures, and more. There is an underlying stumbling block to meaningful change: a misalignment between values and structures, with a dominant economy of prestige often undermining efforts to support the public good. The structures that …

Teaching With Oer During Pandemics And Beyond, Jennifer Van Allen, Stacy Katz Jun 2020

Teaching With Oer During Pandemics And Beyond, Jennifer Van Allen, Stacy Katz

Publications and Research

Purpose – Open Educational Resources (OER) are learning materials openly licensed so that others may retain, reuse, revise, remix or redistribute (the 5Rs) these materials. This paper aims to raise awareness of OER by providing a rationale for using these learning materials and a strategy for educators to get started with OER during the collective crisis and beyond. Design/methodology/approach – Using a broad research base and anecdotes from personal experience, the authors make the case that OER improves student access to learning materials and improves the learning experience in both PK-12 and higher education contexts. Findings – The authors define …

How Can Libraries Move Towards A More Inclusive Model Of Reference? A Practical Approach To Serve Distance Students, Lauren Puzier, Camille Chesley, Amanda M. Lowe

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Research consultations are a valuable service offered by academic libraries for students who are able to visit the library, however, many students enrolled in online degree programs or considering enrollment have limited access to campus services. We designed and tested a virtual reference consultation service for distance learners and graduate students. This interactive poster outlines a practical approach for designing and initiating a virtual research consultation service to offer equitable access to library services and a positive user experience for distance learners.

Taking Your Teaching To The Next Level Through The Use Of Oer, Nicole N. Williams Mar 2020

Taking Your Teaching To The Next Level Through The Use Of Oer, Nicole N. Williams

Publications and Research

Faculty creation, adaptation, and adoption of open educational resources (OER) can be used to enrich every aspect of the professor-student teaching relationship. Adding to the body of OER available allows faculty to rethink every aspect of what they teach and refine how they present that information. Having the ability to edit and adapt existing OER provides faculty with the benefits of collaboration, but without the scheduling concerns that often plague collaborative efforts. OER creation can be as simple as licensing handouts and presentation slides for sharing, or as involved as redesigning an entire course. Putting one’s own stamp on OER …

Foreword: The Dispossessed Majority: Resisting The Second Redemption In América Posfascista (Postfascist America) With Latcrit Scholarship, Community, And Praxis Amidst The Global Pandemic, Sheila I. Velez Martinez

As LatCrit reaches its twenty-fifth anniversary, we aspire for this symposium Foreword to remind its readers of LatCrit’s foundational propositions and ongoing efforts to cultivate new generations of ethical advocates who can systemically analyze the sociolegal conditions that engender injustice and intervene strategically to help create enduring sociolegal, and cultural, change. Working for lasting social change from an antisubordination perspective enables us to see the myriad laws, regulations, policies, and practices that, by intent or effect, enforce the inferior social status of historically- and contemporarily-oppressed groups. In turn, working with a perspective and principle of antisubordination can inspire us to …
