A review of library science journals reveals a dearth of literature on the topic of professional mentorship services offered by academic librarians for graduate students in the humanities and social sciences. The literature that does exist tends to focus on library and information science or other professionally-oriented programs. Mentorship is crucial for the professional success of all categories of graduate students; yet, by focusing on one of these groups, we fail to recognize the shared challenges and unique needs of students across the spectrum of graduate education.

Scholars analyzing the relationship between creativity and graduate research have tended to be PhD supervisors and psychologists. Using qualitative research methods and personal insights, these authors have looked closely at what creativity in the research process entails, and have called on supervisors to more effectively, and explicitly, foster creativity in graduate student research. Within this scholarly conversation, the teaching and support services of librarians have been largely overlooked.

Utilizing The Mentor Badging System In Selectedworks To Facilitate The Faculty-Student Connection, Debra Rodensky, Kadie Mullins

Identifying available faculty research mentors with the right background has been a challenge for student researchers and the teams that support them for many years. To address this challenge, the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) teamed up with the Scholarly Communications Team to introduce ‘Mentor Badging,’ creating a one-stop, searchable database of available mentors. Using a SelectedWorks Mentor Badge gives the OUR team, fellow faculty, and student researchers the opportunity to track available faculty mentors and the nature of the faculty research projects.
