International Students’ Lives In Trinity College And Their Pre-College Preparation, Sihan Zhang Apr 2023

International Students’ Lives In Trinity College And Their Pre-College Preparation, Sihan Zhang

Senior Theses and Projects

The world is more diverse and multicultural nowadays than at any previous time in history. For this reason, one important goal of higher education is to prepare culturally competent individuals with the ability to work effectively with people from different backgrounds. Thus, international education has become one of the best ways to fulfill this goal. However,it is not always so easy for international students to live and work effectively with others who differ from themselves. Therefore I, an international student from Trinity College, tried to find out how a sample of Trinity College international students describes their preparation for college …

How Trinity Students' Time Use Affects Their Mental Health, Yini Xia

Senior Theses and Projects

This study examined how Trinity Students’ time use affects their mental health. I collected the data through Qualtrics online survey software. The survey was initially distributed on February 7th, 2023, to 300 Trinity students via email, with follow-up reminders sent on February 15th and February 22nd. From this initial distribution, I received responses from 54 participants. I then distributed the survey to my classmates, gathering an additional 54 responses. The Effects Of Trinity College’S Campus Culture On The Social And Academic Experiences Of Queer Male Students, Erica Desmond Apr 2023

The Effects Of Trinity College’S Campus Culture On The Social And Academic Experiences Of Queer Male Students, Erica Desmond

Senior Theses and Projects

This qualitative study aims to examine the effects of Trinity College's campus culture on the social and academic experiences of queer men on campus. In order to properly uncover a possible relationship between queerness and the historic marginalization of minority identities at Trinity College, I conducted seven one-on-one interviews with queer male students to understand their first-hand experiences. Through analysis of data from these interviews, I uncovered that Trinity College’s campus culture significantly impacts the social and academic experiences of queer men. Within the context of this culture, queer men with alternate intersections are at an increased risk of social …

The Quizzical Queerness Of A Generation Left Alone With Their Queries: How The Covid-19 Pandemic Has Affected Queer Trinity Students, Cj Donohoe

Senior Theses and Projects

This paper analyzes the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as it pertains to queer students at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Themes of a fuck-it mentality, increased time with family, and broader engagement with the LGBTQIA+ community on social media reinforced queer young people's identities, causing them to be more comfortable and confident in these identities. This research is a qualitative study of 10 queer-identified students at Trinity College and is grounded in theoretical frameworks by Judith Butler and Michel Foucault.

Left At The Door Of Trinity- Community Based Organizations And Their Role In College Success At Trinity, Karolina Barrientos Apr 2022

Left At The Door Of Trinity- Community Based Organizations And Their Role In College Success At Trinity, Karolina Barrientos

Senior Theses and Projects

Community-based organizations, (CBOs) have given a specific subset of students opportunities for higher education. These organizations tasked themselves with providing students from historically marginalized backgrounds, typically students of color from lower social-economic statuses, the resources to access top-tier colleges and universities. This transactional trend can be identified in institutions like Trinity, a private liberal arts college that inherently upholds white supremacy and capitalism. In organizations streamlining students into these institutions, it eventually became clear that access to these organizations is not enough to ensure their success and clear implementation of college success was necessary. Leading me to my research question, …

Thriving Or Surviving?: Socioeconomic Status And On-Campus Experiences Of Second-Year Trinity College Students Of Color, Graciela Valencia Apr 2020

Thriving Or Surviving?: Socioeconomic Status And On-Campus Experiences Of Second-Year Trinity College Students Of Color, Graciela Valencia

Senior Theses and Projects

College campuses have increased their cultural diversity and increased financial aid packages in efforts of becoming more inclusive of race and class. While such efforts have allowed more people of color and the low and working class to use institutions of higher education as a form of social mobility, this does not necessarily mean college environments have truly become inclusive. This study was conducted at Trinity College, an elite, predominantly white institution with the goal of answering how socioeconomic status conditions the experiences of second year students of color. This research was based on eight semi-structured, qualitative interviews with second …

Fomo, Liquid Courage, And The Intoxicated Self, Lindsay Pressman Apr 2020

Fomo, Liquid Courage, And The Intoxicated Self, Lindsay Pressman

Senior Theses and Projects

“Binge-drinking” cannot simply be recognized as a feature of campus culture, but as the product of a profoundly alienating one, made strikingly evident by our creation of a separate world (“drunk world”). We have created a small world of impossible possibles that exists in the corners of the actual; a separate world, in which the imagining of the self, other, and the world, is not only permissible but promoted. At the heart of college students’ “partying hard” is a longing, hope, and dogged determination that the liberating and unifying aspects of this world can overwhelm the actual...and in the meantime …

Linked By Race, Detached By Class: Intersectional Identities Of Black And Latinx Students At An Elite College,, Amber Montalvo Dec 2019

Linked By Race, Detached By Class: Intersectional Identities Of Black And Latinx Students At An Elite College,, Amber Montalvo

Senior Theses and Projects

Elite higher education institutions reflect the culture of the upper-class population in the United States. Trinity College is ranked fifth on a list of schools with the highest ratio of students from the top 1% of income earners relative to the bottom 60%. While there have been successful efforts to increase campus diversity, such efforts focus on race and ethnicity more than social class. In this context, I asked the following research question: how does social class condition the experience of Black and Latinx students at Trinity College? Methods: This project relied on interviews with 7 juniors and seniors at …

Do I Belong Here?: First-Generation Students & Support At Trinity College(S), Jennifer Chavez Apr 2019

Do I Belong Here?: First-Generation Students & Support At Trinity College(S), Jennifer Chavez

Senior Theses and Projects

First-generation students (FGS) are those whose parents have a high school education or less. They are disproportionately low income, of color and less academically prepared than continuing-generation students, complicating college access and enrollment. The psychological and cultural challenges that FGS face on college campuses further exacerbate these barriers. Higher education institutions have implemented initiatives to facilitate FGS transition and belonging. While some research has examined FGS transition, less has focused on specific initiatives for FGS belonging. This project assesses the effect Trinity College’s First-Generation Pre-Orientation Program (FGPO) had on students in the Class of 2021. In order to do so, …

Trinity College Admissions: The Implementation Of Predictors Of Success, Briana Daley Apr 2018

Trinity College Admissions: The Implementation Of Predictors Of Success, Briana Daley

Senior Theses and Projects

In 2015, Trinity College, located in Hartford, Connecticut, implemented a new way to measure applicants. This new system, which is still in place today, allows Admissions Officers to note whether applicants exhibit any of the 13 characteristics, known as the predictors of success, which Trinity claims to value as an institution. In addition to the new list of 13 predictors, Trinity’s Admissions staff continue to assign a numerical personal rating to each applicant. Using de-identified Admissions data for the population of enrolled students in Trinity’s classes of 2020 and 2021, my research investigates whether a relationship exists between the predictors …

Trinity College And Hartford:The Impact Of Community Learning Courses And Internships On Student Perceptions Of Hartford, Jennifer Martin

Senior Theses and Projects

Trinity College is located in Connecticut's capital city of Hartford, which opens opportunities for student engagement with the city. Through participation in Community Learning Courses or Hartford Internships, both of which can be counted for course credit during a student's undergraduate years, students have the opportunity to be active in Hartford and the community. This research paper seeks to compare these student experiences and asks how do perceptions of Hartford vary among Trinity students, and are there differences between those who enrolled in Community Learning Courses verses Career Development internships? Relying on qualitative interviews with Trinity College juniors and seniors, …

Exploring Daca Recipients' Access To Higher Education In Connecticut, Chloe V. Shiras Apr 2015

Exploring Daca Recipients' Access To Higher Education In Connecticut, Chloe V. Shiras

Senior Theses and Projects

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients represent a new and somewhat unexplored population within the undocumented immigrant community. Having only been introduced three years ago, they live within a state of liminality, legally present in the United States for the first time but with the understanding that it can be stripped from them without a moments warning. DACA is an executive order announced by Obama in 2012, which stated that certain DREAMers (young undocumented immigrants who had been brought to the United States by their parents at a young age) would receive temporary relief from deportation, a work permit, …
