Educating The Auditors: Recommendations For Addressing General, Behavioral Competency Needs In Collegiate Accounting Programs, Charles T. Saunders
Learning Showcase 2014
The continuing evolution of the business world has a direct impact on the landscape and curriculum of higher education, where business professionals are trained. The needs of the business world influence not only what is taught (i.e., business curriculum content), but also how we, as educators, teach foundational skills and core competencies.
Recent research published by the Institute of Internal Auditors Research Foundation suggests that there is a discrepancy between stakeholders’ and auditors’ perceptions of internal auditor competency levels and value to the organization. The survey identified the following four competencies with the lowest ratings overall:
- Conflict Resolution/Negotiation Skills;

Technical Quality And Engagement In A Hybrid Communication Course, Brenda L. Jones
Learning Showcase 2014
Hybrid courses combine face-to-face and online students in an instructor-led synchronous session supported by internet-based video conferencing. Instructional technology selection models theorize that a minimum level of technical quality as well as two-way interaction between instructors and students are needed to achieve engaging and effective learning in the hybrid context (Caladine, 2008; Huddlestone & Pike, 2008).
The study reported in this paper was conducted in two sections of a hybrid communication course and focused on technical quality and student engagement with the instructor and classmates. A theoretical model of a “learning threshold” was advanced, suggesting that richer media might support …

Transnational Educational Institutions (TNEs) engage students who seek international education and career advancement without having to leave their region or home country.
TNE activities have expanded significantly over the past 20 years due in part to the advancement of eLearning modalities and the growth of global partnership activities in higher education. In addition, there are several push and pull …

Learning Showcase 2014
The question of how to better match students’ individual learning capabilities with instructional modalities, with a view to improving student performance, has increasingly attracted researcher and educator attention. Consistent with this trend, a team of faculty from the College of Arts, Sciences and Technology at Franklin University conducted a study that investigated whether differences between instructor and student learning styles may account for performance disparities as well as how students might perform differently as a result of their individual learning preferences. The research sample consisted of 161 college students attending a basic statistics course. Instructor and student learning styles, using …

Critical Thinking In The Information Technology Program: A Deciding Factor For Employment, Todd A. Whittaker, Isidoro Talavera
Learning Showcase 2014
“[C]ritical thinking [as analysis and evaluation] is an active skill-building process, not a subject for passive academic study.” Thus, it cannot be mastered through the technical content of a major alone. This suggests that there is a crucial gap between a purely vocationally focused approach to teaching and the higher-cognitive skills (i.e., learning through connecting ideas together) necessary for students “to compete successfully in securing employment or progressing in their chosen field.” Business leaders and educators around the globe realize that critical thinking is in short supply across the board, and managers and employees must be able to think critically …

Learning Showcase 2014
The urgency of implementation of financial literacy education has been recognized in the recent years. This study evaluates the recent progress on state financial literacy legislation and the effectiveness of personal finance education mandates in high schools. The three common approaches to the mandatory personal finance education policy take forms in setting education standards, personal finance courses, and required testing. Course mandates appear to be the most effective in raising financial literacy scores. State policy requiring testing personal finance concepts has been the least effective. The findings of this study have important implications for policymakers, educators and researchers considering personal …

10 Tips To Increase Student Engagement In The Classroom, Barbara Carder
Learning Showcase 2014
Introduction and Background: Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.—William Butler Yeats.
A growing body of research has made it clear that the overall quality of teaching and learning is improved when students have opportunities to question, clarify, and apply new knowledge. No longer can faculty use a lecture-only technique to impart information. Therefore, when faculty create opportunities for our learners to engage new material and use active learning techniques they help “light the fire” of learning.
Response: This poster presentation provides 10 tips to Franklin University faculty to increase student engagement …

Learning Showcase 2014
The Franklin University Nationwide Library (FUNL) has long been considered a significant contributing resource to our university community. Yet, in spite of our high level of professional competence and credibility, we are reticent to “tell our story” or to promote to others the list of services we provide. This reluctance is rooted in the professional academic preparation and service ethic that characterizes librarianship.
Compelling contemporary trends in higher education mandate that all academic programs provide robust performance evaluation and verified and validated measures of Return on Investment (ROI). ROI is a technique for quantifying the extent to which investment in …

At Franklin University we are well ahead of most schools in Ohio, relative to our infrastructure to award college credit for prior learning and through the diversity of our PLA options. Recognizing the importance of this initiative, next steps include enhancing …
Minding The Gap: Connecting Students To Academic Support Resources, Heather Sherman, Elisha Teague
Minding The Gap: Connecting Students To Academic Support Resources, Heather Sherman, Elisha Teague
Learning Showcase 2014
Delivering academic support to the students who need it the most is a constant challenge for the Student Learning Center. Although, we know students tend to be more successful in a course if they participate in some type of academic support (tutoring, workshop, etc.), we still see a large number of students who never seek out any type of assistance even when they are struggling. Knowing this information, the question then becomes how do we to “Mind the Gap” or connect students who need additional assistance to the academic support resources. In order to gain a better understanding the who, …

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine (STEMM)-related disciplines are critical to the future success of the State of Ohio and the nation. Many employers in Ohio cannot find the STEMM talent they need to stay competitive and grow in the global marketplace. Even during the most recent economic downturn, STEMM skills have remained in high demand – for the STEMM workforce there are 2.3 jobs for every unemployed person; for the non- STEMM workforce there are 3.9 unemployed people for every job. The primary objectives of the Choose Ohio First (COF) scholarship program are to support increased participation and retention …

Factors That Hinder Underrepresented Minority Adn Students From Initially Pursuing Baccalaureate Nursing Education, Tanika Cherry-Montgomery
Learning Showcase 2014
The lack of minority representation in the nursing profession has been an area of concern for quite some time because of its direct correlation on the health of our nation. However, the lack of minority representation in the nursing workforce and on baccalaureate (BSN) college campuses persists. Students from underrepresented backgrounds comprise 26.6% of entry-level nursing baccalaureate programs (AACN, 2014) and 16.8% of the nursing workforce (HRSA, 2010), yet 32% of the US population is from a racially or ethnically diverse background (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011). The numbers of diverse nurses who are in practice pales in comparison to the …

Overcoming Post-Graduate Uncertainty, Domonique Chapman
Learning Showcase 2014

Using Tutoring To Promote Student Success At A Community College, Elizabeth Fallon
Learning Showcase 2014
It is widely acknowledged that students who begin college by taking developmental curriculum are at a disadvantage in terms of likelihood of degree completion. Research and practice has shown that students who use tutoring can improve course grades. Bloom’s 1984 study demonstrated that one-on-one, face-to-face tutoring is effective.
