Spring 2009 Women's History Celebration, March 16 to March 31. This year's celebration, "Sustaining Our Lives: Women Take the Lead to Save Our Planet" will focus on the role of women involved with environmental projects, activism, and scholarship. We would like to encourage students' environmental engagement by presenting what women have done in the past and what issues they might like to address in the present and the future. As always, we will provide an array of speakers, panels, films, and displays that will reflect the diversity of women's experiences locally, nationally, and internationally.

The School of Performing Arts is inviting Pam Chabora to come to the University of Maine to treat the campus population and the general public to a one-woman production that will bring Emily Dickinson's work to life. The play, called "The Belle of Amherst" will be performed by Chabora, a veteran stage actor and professor of theatre and dance at North Dakota State University. The two-act play highlights the events of Dickinson's life, sprinkled with selections of her poetry. The 2009 Festival will be held at the Maine Center for the Arts on February 14th and will feature matinee and evening performances. We intend to involve as many relevant campus groups and departments as possible to make this a true campus wide collaboration. As in past years this event will be free so that people of Maine have access to the cultural vitality of the University of Maine. In past years people have come from as far away as Presque Isle and Portland to enjoy this event.

I would like to invite Grégoire Chabot, a Franco American play-write, and his bilingual troupe to campus. Greg Chabot is originally from Waterville, Maine. He is one of the few Franco Americans who continues to write in French. His theater troupe, Da monde d'á côtá, has performed his plays in France, Quebec, and Louisiana. He also represents the entire New England Franco American community to the recently established Centre de la Francophonie des Amériques . He is an important voice of the Franco American community.

Keynote Speaker: Peruvian archaeologist Luis Jaime Castillo will present a public lecture on his eighteen years of archaeological research on the Moche cultute (2nd -8th centuries AD) of northern Peru. Castillo is currently Professor of the Humanities Department and Director of the International Relations and Cooperation Department at the Pontifcia Universidad Catolica del Peru, in Lima, Peru. The Department of Art cultural programming will consist of two related events: L) a major exhibition The Conjurer: Images and Forms by David Larson; and 2) a gallery talk by Soren Larson, son of David Larson, producer for Reuters News and film-maker. I write to request the Committee's support for the fall 2008 New V/riting Series, an innovative literary arts program sponsored by the English Department and the National Poetry Foundation.

The fall Series is projected to comprise seven events featuring eight writers, including three nationally prominent fiction writers (Lydia Millet, Diane Williams, and Davis Schneiderman), four poets from the United Kingdom (Alan Hasley, Geraldine Monk, Tom Pickard, and Tom Raworth), and the multi-talented African American poet and sound artist Tracie Morris. Bruno Campo is the conductor, founder, and director of music programs of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and School in Guatemala. What is his connection to the University of Maine? The relationship started two years ago when UMaine Professor of Music Anatole Wieck was invited to the country to help nurture a newly founded youth orchestra. As a Fulbright Senior Specialist, Wieck spent three weeks in the country, establishing such a strong connection that Campo invited him to return to Guatemala during his sabbatical last year.

Brunswick-based author, boxer, kayaker and lobster fisherman, Jaed Coffin, will lead a discussion and sign copies of his first book, "A Chant to Soothe Wild Elephants" which chronicles his time at the Buddhist temple in Thailand where he was ordained as a monk. A graduate of Middlebury College and the University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast Writing Program, Jaed's first book has been hailed as a coming-of-age story that transcends the memoir genre.
