The colleges and universities in the United States that have adopted a proactive commitment to diversity in the curriculum have done so because they understand how their central mission is linked with the future of a diverse society. They are aware that, in the new millennium, most new jobs in the economy require a postsecondary education, and women and racial/ethnic minorities compose a majority of the workforce. Women have long been struggling for equality in the tenured ranks of academia. The rigid tenure system has historically sanctioned rules for all who wish to enter. Research into this persistent inequity has focused on the "chilly" structure of universities (Blum, 1991) and on the question of women's ability to produce scholarship (Cole & Zuckerman, 1987). Higher education administrators have been challenged with creating optimal learning and developmental environments, and have identified residence halls as one area on college campuses that can be used as a tool in promoting learning. In order to be more purposeful in creating learning environments, housing administrators have created residential learning communities. The communities discussed in this paper have centered around freshmen interest groups, academic areas and majors, and common interests.
