The Civic Engagement Scholars Initiative (CESI) is a professional development program that supports faculty and community partners to effectively engage undergraduate students in service-learning and community-based research activities. CESI aims to reinforce classroom learning, foster civic habits and skills, and address community-identified needs.

The Campus Kitchen at the University of Massachusetts Boston (CKUMB) is a part of The Campus Kitchens Project. (CKP), a national network of student volunteers, works to rescue excess food to create meals for those in need. CKUMB opened in 2010 to provide meals for the Dorchester community. By taking the initiative to run a community kitchen, students develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills, along with a commitment to serve their community, that they will carry with them into future careers.

UMass Boston students are a force for driving the shape, structure, and scope of the international programs that are offered at UMass Boston and beyond campus borders. The Office of International and Transnational Affairs offers outstanding UMass Boston students the opportunity to further their experiences in international leadership through the Global Ambassadors Program. Each semester, a select group of UMass Boston students is accepted to the year-long certificate program through which they spread the understanding and appreciation of different cultures, backgrounds, and viewpoints.

The Honors College aims to serve as a crucible for curricular innovation by enriching and deepening classroom study with on-the-ground learning. The symposium is a year-long course, with the winter session field trip giving students a two-week immersion in the details of HIV/AIDS health care delivery in one province of South Africa. Upon return, students volunteer at health centers or nonprofits exploring related topics, while continuing to study the complexity of South Africa’s history and its attitudes and approaches toward HIV/AIDS at the medical, cultural, economic, and social levels.

The FY2013 annual report of data from the Think College National Coordinating Center on the Transition Postsecondary Education Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabiities (TPSID) projects. These annual reports share data and analysis from data collected from a total of 54 TPSID projects annually from 2010-2015 on the programmatic structures and student characteristics and student outcomes.

In 2010, the Office of Postsecondary Education awarded grants to 27 institutions of higher education (IHEs) to create or expand access to higher education for students with intellectual disabilities in 23 states. These model demonstration projects, known as Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSIDs), were asked to create meaningful credentials for students who completed their programs. This Fast Fact reviews what kind of credentials are available to students with ID in college.
