First-generation and low-income students are increasingly matriculating into post-secondary education. Acclimating first-generation and low-income students to higher education presents unique challenges and opportunities to improve institutional support and services. This program will inform participants about how Michigan State University used multiple data sources to assess, intervene, and support students from first-generation and low-income backgrounds involved in the Student Success Initiative. This program adds to the emerging conversation on using data to understand students and make decisions about student services.

High School To College Transition: A Profile Of The Stressors, Physical And Psychological Health Issues That Affect The First-Year On-Campus College Student, Terence Hicks, Samuel Heastie

The purpose of this article is to provide identified stressors, physical and psychological health issues that affect first year campus college students as they transition from high school to college. The Health Behaviors, Self-Rated Health and Quality of Life (QOL) questionnaire was administered to 514 university college students. Results from this study determined that there were significant differences among student life stressors and physical and psychological health status between first-year on-campus and first-year off-campus college students. Most importantly this study documented compelling information regarding selection of roommate, poor housing, chronic and temporary diseases, injury and prescription medicine among college students …

While admissions at the undergraduate level are experiencing a surge of students over 30 years of age, the pool of traditionally aged students is declining. These phenomena indicate that older (over age 30) students will also be enrolling in graduate programs in increasing numbers. This paper addresses the issue of retention as it pertains to older female graduate students. Data are examined from a fall 1991 survey and its 1992 followup at a large Midwestern research university.
