Called To Teach: Interpreting The Phenomenon Of Calling As A Motivating Factor, Samuel J. Smith, Jared T. Bigham

Samuel James Smith

This hermeneutic phenomenological study examines the phenomenon of the calling to teach. Nine participants were interviewed, and the dialogue was analyzed for themes uncovered from participants’ interpreted experiences. The following themes were revealed: the calling experience as a process, esteem for the teaching profession as a calling, the use of spirituality for affirmation, and the direct impact of spirituality on career choice.

The Power Of Simple Hands-On Cyberforensics Exercises: A Guide For Faculty, Gary C. Kessler, Jim Hoag May 2008

The Power Of Simple Hands-On Cyberforensics Exercises: A Guide For Faculty, Gary C. Kessler, Jim Hoag

Gary C. Kessler

"Computer forensics is a hands-on discipline. Introductory skills, however, can be taught using simple exercises that require neither expensive laboratory facilities nor even face-to-face courses. This paper describes a simple floppy disk analysis project that allows an instructor to address issues ranging from the computer forensics process and basics of file systems to long file names, file signatures, and hashing. Projects are essential to teaching this discipline as they support active learning, constructivism, and active learning. These hands-on projects also offer an opportunity for courses to be taught online and for students to build their own toolkits using open source …

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (FKE) teaching and learning processes was certified to ISO 9001:2000 and now seeks the Engineering Accreditation Council of Malaysia (EAC) approval. One of FKE’s top management commitment is to ensure the programme accreditation requirements are met. EAC adopts American Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology 2000 (ABET) principles which promote outcome based education (OBE) learning process. OBE calls for the evaluation of the course learning outcomes (CLO) as specified in each Course Outline. Performance measurement has been largely dependent on students’ performance in carrying out tasks such as tests, quizzes or submission …

Fulfilling The Dream : An Online Early Childhood Teacher Education Course, Pauline Taylor Dec 2007

Fulfilling The Dream : An Online Early Childhood Teacher Education Course, Pauline Taylor

Associate Professor Pauline Taylor-Guy

This paper presents a study into the motivations, aspirations and characteristics of students who embarked on a new wholly-online early childhood teacher preparation program introduced at James Cook University in 2007. The inquiry contributes to a number of areas where there is currently little research. Australian studies into the experiences of first-year undergraduates focus on on-campus students, not on students who engage with tertiary studies wholly online, nor do they specifically relate to preservice teacher education. Contemporary research into e-learning is predominantly based on blended learning rather than solely online modes of study. In addition, there is little literature relating …

Remedial/Developmental Education And The Cost Of Community College Transfer: A Los Angeles County Sample, Tatiana Melguizo, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Scott Cypers Dec 2007

Remedial/Developmental Education And The Cost Of Community College Transfer: A Los Angeles County Sample, Tatiana Melguizo, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Scott Cypers

Linda Serra Hagedorn

This study calculates and explores the total costs of a community college education prior to transfer to a four-year college. Included are all courses both at and below the college level by 411 students who attended one of the nine community colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and who successfully transferred to a four-year institution. The main finding is that students with deep developmental needs averaged five years at the community college before transferring, and transferred only one year's worth of college-level courses. Of concern is the great number of African American and Latino students in remedial …

Introducing Learning Commons Functionality Into A Traditional Reference Setting, Jeffrey A. Franks Dec 2007

Introducing Learning Commons Functionality Into A Traditional Reference Setting, Jeffrey A. Franks

Jeffrey A Franks

For the past decade the University Libraries at The University of Akron has been modifying and enhancing its services in response to changing technologies and user needs, as well as evolving campus strategies. Library efforts centered on service excellence and student success have played a leading role in the inclusion of a planned learning commons as one of the key strategic initiatives of the University. At this time the learning commons concept has been fully developed, while the proposed building renovation plan is underway. The Library, however, is utilizing key opportunities in the present to integrate learning commons functionality into …

The Bologna Process And Its Impact In Europe: It's So Much More Than Degree Changes, Laurel S. Terry Dec 2007

The Bologna Process And Its Impact In Europe: It's So Much More Than Degree Changes, Laurel S. Terry

Laurel S. Terry

The Bologna Process is a massive, multi-year project designed to create the European Higher Education Area by the year 2010. It began approximately ten years ago when four European Union (EU) countries signed a relatively vague declaration. It has now grown to forty-six countries, including all of the EU Member States and nineteen non-EU countries. The Bologna Process countries have agreed on ten action lines for restructuring European higher education. These action lines are nothing short of revolutionary - they address everything from adoption of a three-cycle degree system (e.g., bachelor-master's-doctorate degrees), European-wide quality assurance efforts, mobility of higher education …
