Literacy Curricula, The Common Core, And Defending An Unpopular Profession: The Lived Experiences Of Undergraduate Preservice Literacy Teachers, Susan A. Sturm
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
This study explored the lived experiences of eight pre-service teachers, specifically their understandings of teaching Common Core-aligned English language arts (ELA) and their feelings about becoming teachers of literacy amid the current era of accountability. Phenomenological methods were used to interview participants and analyze data for significant statements made by all eight pre-service teachers involved. Major themes to emerge include that pre-service teachers felt prepared to design ELA lessons but unprepared to develop an ELA curriculum; they felt the Common Core State Standards had changed everything about teaching; and they were anxious about becoming teachers during a time of great …

Being In Tension: Faculty Explorations Of The Meaning Of Social Justice In Teacher Education, Mary Shelley Thomas, Christine D. Clayton, Shin-Ying Huang, Roberto Garcia
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
This study explores faculty perspectives of social justice in teacher education within one New York institution with a social justice focus. Grounded in the institution’s self-study process for accreditation, the researchers were a part of a team that collected data from structured interviews, including a card sort, of 42 full time teacher educators across 16 programs in the institution. Informed by sociocultural theories (Vygotsky, 1978, Wertsch, 1991), a content analysis revealed the language selected by faculty as well as their meaning-making process and describes how individuals contextualized those meanings. Findings demonstrated a range of meanings and lack of a shared …

Implementing Social And Emotional Learning Standards By Intertwining The Habits Of Mind With The Casel Competencies, Kimberly Alexander, Paul Vermette
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
The New York State Education Department (NYSED) adopted a set of three standards for social and emotional learning (SEL) in August 2018. In doing so, they have paved the way for explicit instruction in and assessment of 21st-century skills. The three-goal framework selected by NYSED (2018) is modeled after the five competencies of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL, 2018). The authors are overjoyed by this movement to promote dual objective learning (Vermette & Kline, 2017) targeting affective and cognitive goals, but are hesitant to use the CASEL (2018) framework for such SEL standards. Prior …

Epigenetic Regulation On Plant Stress Memory, Febri Adi Susanto
Epigenetic Regulation On Plant Stress Memory, Febri Adi Susanto
International Programs
Plants are sessile organisms; they cannot move like animals when the environment is not favorable. Therefore, plants need a mechanism to cope with environmental changes. For example, when a plant experiences stress, like water deficit, it will employ a certain mechanism that allows the plant to survive the next exposure (see Fig. 1), often referred to as “Epigenetic” regulation. By application, epigenetics deals with the changes of the level of the gene expression without change in the DNA sequence, by DNA methylation, histone modifications, and or small RNA regulation. Plant epigenetic regulation is related to the Lamarckian theory of evolution. …

Human intervention in nature often destroys the equilibrium that has been established in it. It is very important to find controls that would not destroy the stability of the natural equilibrium in the ecosystem. The impulsive systems theory allows us to investigate such effects on a biological system with a simpler example that do not destroy its equilibrium.

People are born with antipathy for those who are different. The reason for that is “the behavioral immune system” that for years helped people to protect themselves from diseases brought with strangers (Schaller, Park, 2011). Today that instinct is expressed in “experience of disgust, for extroversion and social interaction, for xenophobia and other prejudices, and for the origins of the cultural differences” (p.99). Research of Syracuse University students showed that the one of the best ways to increase empathy between people is in working with younger children. That is how “Empathy Matters” appeared – social project of Hendricks Chapel, the …

Vitamin K For Stronger Horse Bones, Ahmad Munjizun
International Programs
There is a growing demand for research regarding solutions to skeletal problems in horses. In human medical science, various studies on the effect of vitamin K on human bones showed positive effects of vitamin K supplementation on bone health. In horses, very little information about the role of vitamin K exists. Also, since horses are fed nowadays with a huge proportion of concentrate, it is important to figure out whether this also contributes to the high prevalence of bone problems. Therefore, research on vitamin K manipulation needs to be conducted.

Since about the 1960´s the changes in landscapes have been more intense and have affected biodiversity due to society becoming increasingly urbanized. At the same time natural ecosystems have deteriorated (Metzger et al., 2006, Laurance et al. 2014). Reducing environmental change is one of the most important sustainability pillars of our world because all societies and businesses depend on the natural system for well-being. The complexity of this problem, arises as a result of diverse cultural, political and social factors. In this poster, I focus on how agriculture has transformed landscapes and decrease global sustainability.
