The dissertation in practice was an effort to understand the relationship between communication and marketing strategies and students, faculty, and staff at a university library. The problem of practice reflected messaging challenges facing academic libraries over decades of change with rapidly changing technologies and changing stakeholder perceptions about libraries in an academic setting. The mixed-methods approach was guided by the user-centered design thinking process and endeavored to discover how a formalized marketing effort could positively shift longstanding stakeholder perceptions and increase engagement with university library resources and services. The scholar practitioner explored the problem of practice in the role of empathy in writing center services, focusing on tutoring training. The research aimed to determine if empathy training and mindfulness could enhance the empathetic practices of writing center staff, and if such enhancements would make students using writing center services feel more included, seen, and heard during tutoring sessions. This paper discusses the challenges and opportunities of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the financial stress, digital divide, and inequalities in educational opportunities that arose during this period. However, it also acknowledges the advantages of remote learning, such as flexible scheduling, individualized learning, and global collaboration. The study design used was qualitative, aiming to identify the perceived levels of student engagement and support between faculty and students, and the perceived levels of success of completing a blended learning course in an online, hybrid, or hyflex format during a global pandemic.
