Doctoral Students: Online, On Time, And On To Graduation, Susan Adragna, Kelly Gatewood, Karen Rinelli, Karen Zelbovitz

South Florida Education Research Conference

Increased numbers of students are enrolling in online doctoral programs. Although students enroll for a variety of reasons, many do not persist to the dissertation phase. The results of this quantitative study can guide the development of retention strategies for students who are at risk of academic failure in doctoral programs.

Users Acceptance Of Online Enrollment Processes In A Higher Education Institution, Luis F. Rodriguez Dec 2014

Users Acceptance Of Online Enrollment Processes In A Higher Education Institution, Luis F. Rodriguez

South Florida Education Research Conference

Little is known about students’ perceptions of online enrollment processes. Student satisfaction is part of the assessment required for accreditation, but evidence suggests that college administrators are oriented to retention and graduation rates rather than to consumer perception. The purpose of this descriptive quantitative study was to develop and validate a model that enables the measurement of online enrollment processes by the analysis of the students’ perceptions. The theoretical framework used to support this study was the process virtualization theory while the conceptual framework was based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). TAM is the most valid framework for studying user …

The Decolonization Of Northwest Community College, Beverly Moore-Garcia

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1996, the authors of the Canadian Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples concluded Canadian educational policy had been based on the false assumption of the superiority of European worldviews. The report authors recommended the transformation of curriculum and schools to recognize that European knowledge was not universal. Aboriginal researcher Battiste believes the current system of Canadian education causes Aboriginal children to face cognitive imperialism and cognitive assimilation and that this current practice of cultural racism in Canada makes educational institutions a hostile environment for Aboriginal learners. In order to counter this cultural racism, Battiste calls for the decolonization of education. …

Utilizing Traditional Cognitive Measures Of Academic Preparation To Predict First-Year Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Majors' Success In Math And Science Courses, Charles K. Andrews

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the past several years, U.S. colleges and universities have faced increased pressure to improve retention and graduation rates. At the same time, educational institutions have placed a greater emphasis on the importance of enrolling more students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs and producing more STEM graduates. The resulting problem faced by educators involves finding new ways to support the success of STEM majors, regardless of their pre-college academic preparation. The purpose of my research study involved utilizing first-year STEM majors’ math SAT scores, unweighted high school GPA, math placement test scores, and the highest level of …

The Efficacy Of An Interactive Computer System For Teaching Developmental Mathematics To College Students, Jeffrey Miranda

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many students are entering colleges and universities in the United States underprepared in mathematics. National statistics indicate that only approximately one-third of students in developmental mathematics courses pass. When underprepared students repeatedly enroll in courses that do not count toward their degree, it costs them money and delays graduation. This study investigated a possible solution to this problem: Whether using a particular computer assisted learning strategy combined with using mastery learning techniques improved the overall performance of students in a developmental mathematics course. Participants received one of three teaching strategies: (a) group A was taught using traditional instruction with mastery …
