Dominican honored “Unity in Diversity” on campus March 25 with a series of events beginning in Guzman Hall and culminating with the Melba Beals Awards for Excellence in Diversity and the annual Soul Candy celebration in Angelico Hall.

Goals of the DUOC Safe Zone Program:
• To increase the overall campus community’s understanding and awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues
• To provide a greater sense of safety for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender student community
• To offer information to straight allies in positions where they may be in contact with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people (as classmates, roommates, friends, residents, students, staff, faculty, etc.)
• To act as a resource of information regarding homophobia, heterosexism, transphobia and LGBTQ issues on the DUOC campus.

The twin sisters took full advantage of those opportunities. After graduating on May 17, they planned to take a year off to prepare for medical school then apply for entry to USCF and UC Irvine for the fall 2015.

Dominican's Office of Diversity and Equity and its advisory board, the Diversity Action Group, created the awards to recognize significant contributions to diversity work by individuals, groups (including student organizations and honor societies), and programs from the Dominican community.

Art Exhibition At Alemany Library Celebrates Diversity, Sarah Gardner, Dave Albee

The exhibit, which celebrates diversity on campus, is on display in the Community Gallery on the second floor of Alemany Library during normal business hours through January 30, 2014. Among noted local, regional, national and international artists selected to participate in the exhibition are Julie-Anne Cosgrove, Jaime Crespo, John Fadeff, Jason Gonzalez, Andrea Speer Hibbard, Jennifer Hirshfield, Walid Khalaf, Molly Perez, Yvette Ramos and Raul del Rio.
