Validity Of Body Volume Estimates From A Smartphone 3-Dimensional Scanning Application, Ethan G. Tinoco, Christian Rodriguez, Madelin R. Siedler, Christian Lavalle, Christine M. Florez, Sarah White, Alexandra Brojanac, Jaylynn Rasco, Gabrielle Dehaven, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Body volume (BV) indicates the total 3-dimensional (3D) space an individual occupies. BV is either used alongside body mass in density-based two-compartment models or in conjunction with other body components in multi-compartment models to estimate body composition (BC). BV estimates are typically produced by costly laboratory methods, such as hydrostatic weighing or air-displacement plethysmography (ADP). However, more accessible options are emerging. Smartphone-based 3D scanning uses the phone’s built-in camera to provide a BV estimate in a time-efficient and cost-effective manner. However, few investigations have validated this method against an accepted laboratory technique. PURPOSE: To determine the validity of BV from …

Validity Of Garmin Devices While Ascending And Descending Flights Of Stairs, Alan V. Garcia, Melissa Strehlow, Dustin W. Davis, Javen Miguel, Jeff Montes

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The use of wearable technology to track physical activity is popular among fitness enthusiasts and the general public. There are many brands that offer a variety of devices. One popular brand is Garmin. The validity of Garmin’s wrist-worn devices in measuring step counts in various settings, such as walking up and down a staircase, is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to determine if two devices, the Garmin fēnix 5 and Garmin vívosmart HR record valid measures of step count when ascending and descending flights of stairs at three different speeds. METHODS: Twenty participants (n=20) were tested …

Auslander, Zakkoyya H. Lewis, Lara Killick

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Purpose: Within the US, people are experiencing longer life expectancy, yet these extended lifespans have not necessarily translated into years living in good health. Research shows that regular resistance exercise carries distinct preventive health benefits for older adults. The purpose of this research is to conduct a multi-phased study to evaluate the fidelity of an equipment-based resistance training program designed specifically for older adults. Methods: A three-phased study has been designed. Phase 1 consisted of a systematic literature review to identify salient measures of internal and external validity for equipment-based resistance training programs for older adults. Phase 2 is a …

Rasch Analysis Of The Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale Among 9th- And 10th-Grade Students, Jane Shimon, Yong Gao Apr 2022

Rasch Analysis Of The Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale Among 9th- And 10th-Grade Students, Jane Shimon, Yong Gao

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Rasch Model analysis was used to evaluate construct validity and reliability of the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) in an adolescent population. A total of 349 9th and 10th graders (180 male; 169 female), aged 13 to 15 years (M = 14.13 SD = .793), completed the 18-item PACES scale at the conclusion of physical education classes. Responses to PACES items were analyzed using Rasch partial credit model. Of the 18 PACES items, five were identified as misfit items and were removed. The remaining 13 good-fit items (difficulty level ranged from -0.81 for Item #10 to 0.66 logits for Item …

Examining An Adapted Version Of Ryff’S Scales Of Psychological Well-Being In Sport, Despina Kouali, Craig Hall, Paige Pope Mar 2022

Examining An Adapted Version Of Ryff’S Scales Of Psychological Well-Being In Sport, Despina Kouali, Craig Hall, Paige Pope

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background:‪In the sport literature, the majority of studies have failed to distinguish between general well-being and well-being specific to the sport context. This is partly because of a lack of sport specific measurement tools. The purpose of the present study was to adapt an existing eudaimonic well-being global instrument (i.e., Scales of Psychological Well-Being) for the sport context. Material and methods:‪The study included two phases. A panel of nine experts assessed the content relevance of each of the modified items of three scales of the SPWB in Phase 1 and a set of 19 items was retained with modifications. Four …

Determination Of Maximal Oxygen Uptake Through A New Basketball-Specific Field Test, Ersen Adsiz, Gulbin Rudarli Nalcakan, S. Rana Varol, Faik Vural

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

The aim of this study was to develop a new basketball-specific field test (BSFT) that determines the maximal oxygen uptake indirectly and to determine the reliability and validity of the test for measuring aerobic power. An aerobic endurance-based test totalling 1.5 miles on a basketball court including side steps and running was designed to be completed as quickly as possible. 15-year-old, male basketball players’ maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) levels measured directly as the gold standard laboratory test. Laboratory test results showed a significant negative correlation between the VO2max level and the duration of the BSFT (r = -0.705, p = …

Twenty-three professionals and 464 children, newborn to 13 years-old participated in the study. We found strong content (94% to 100% of judges’ agreement) and criterion validity, internal consistency (α from .96 to .97), and inter-rater objectivity (ICC from .81 to .98), and test-retest reliability (ICC from .94 to .98). Appropriate …

Validity Of B-Mode Ultrasound For Body Composition Assessment In The Field, Nathan Jensen, Conner Dearden, Brett Holmes, Shane Draper, Andrew Creer Nov 2021

Validity Of B-Mode Ultrasound For Body Composition Assessment In The Field, Nathan Jensen, Conner Dearden, Brett Holmes, Shane Draper, Andrew Creer

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Air displacement plethysmography (ADP) is a common way to assess athlete body composition in many laboratories. While this method provides accurate values for body composition, it is not a feasible option for field work. Identifying an accurate, user friendly alternative to skinfold calipers may allow for accurate assessment of body composition in more applied settings, such as various training and competition venues. PURPOSE: To determine the validity of B-mode ultrasound for body composition assessment by comparing this method to values obtained using ADP. METHODS: To date, 14 actively training runners (≥ 4 hours/week for the last year) have …
