The first organized program in physical education appeared in American colleges at the University of Virginia between the years 1850 and 1860. The first public school program appeared somewhat later. Since these beginnings, school and college programs have advanced steadily, keeping pace with our advancement in the philosophy of education and biological science. At the present time, almost all schools include physical education as an element in the curriculum.

In the vernacular of higher education, withdrawal from college before graduation is known as student mortality. Staying for the full course of study is called survival. "Students and their parents so often fix their attention on the business of gaining admission to college that they fall into the easy error of thinking that a degree will automatically follow from the allotted time spent there. The fact is that, on average, half of the class will have fallen by the wayside."

The health of the students in a class is of vital importance to every teacher because of the relationship between health of the students and their performance in school. Especially is this true of the Physical Education instructor and coach, whose job it is to work with the students in physical activities.
