Introduction: Range of motion (ROM) of resistance exercise affects the muscle damage magnitude and the recovery-time course. Thus, the main aim of this study was to compare conventional and extended ROM in the bench press exercise on neuromuscular fatigue assessed by velocity changes during bench press throw, as well on the exercise-induced muscle damage evaluated by creatine kinase (CK) activity in the blood. This study examined the effects of hot water immersion (HWI) on exercise performance and inflammatory markers after a resistance exercise-induced muscle damage protocol. Strength trained males (n = 5) and females (n = 5) completed two experimental trials separated by at least 2 weeks in a randomized crossover design; one trial involved HWI, the other temperate water immersion (TWI). For each trial, subjects performed a muscle damaging protocol followed by HWI or TWI for up to 50 minutes. To examine the contralateral repeated bout effect (CL-RBE) on muscle damage markers and motor unit (MU) control strategies, seventeen healthy adults performed two bouts of 60 eccentric contractions with elbow flexor (EF group; n ​= ​9) or index finger abductor (IA group; n ​= ​8) muscles, separated by 1 week. Following intense exercise, there is a period of time where performance is decreased. This period of reduced performance is characterized by several factors including myofibrillar disruption, reduced range-of-motion, inflammation, and an influx of enzymes and proteins. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been marketed as a recovery supplement capable of reducing markers of fatigue and inflammation following exercise, yet this claim has not been investigated. Repeated bout effect (RBE) describes a phenomenon that an initial unaccustomed eccentric exercise (ECC) bout can confer a protective effect against muscle damage from the subsequent same exercise. This protection has been observed in the same muscle, as well as the contralateral homologous (CL-RBE) muscle. But it is unknown whether the RBE is evident for non-local unrelated heterogonous muscles. We compared the effects of low intensity concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) exercise on the force and neural responses of the dominant (exercised) elbow flexors (EFs), and studied if these conditions could induce cross-over effects to the contralateral (non-exercised) EFs. Fifteen subjects (8 males) completed all conditions (CON and ECC: 6 sets of low intensity exercise to failure; control: rest) in separate visits with a randomized order. Maximal isometric force and electromyography (EMG) of the dominant and contralateral EFs were assessed at pre, immediate-, 24-, and 48-h-post. PURPOSE: Curcumin is a natural polyphenolic compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In vitro and in vivo animal studies have demonstrated that exposure to curcumin leads to dysregulation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). Prolonged endurance exercise performances provide a unique model for investigating the combined effects of oxidative stress and eccentric muscle contraction on differential gene expression with nutritional interventions known to blunt inflammation. Dietary polyphenols (i.e. curcumin, pomegranate, etc.) have been shown to reduce exercise-induced inflammation associated mRNA and protein expression with fewer side effects than NSAIDs.
