An Examination Of The Effectiveness Of Teaching Nonverbal Sensitivity To Students In An Occupational Therapy Curriculum, Darla Kathleen Schurmeier Dec 1990

An Examination Of The Effectiveness Of Teaching Nonverbal Sensitivity To Students In An Occupational Therapy Curriculum, Darla Kathleen Schurmeier

Masters Theses

The effectiveness of teaching nonverbal communication skills to undergraduate students in an occupational therapy curriculum at Western Michigan University was explored by testing students just entering the program and students leaving the campus for their fieldwork experiences. A control group was made up of undergraduate students from curricula that did not purposely teach sensitivity to nonverbal cues. The 50 subjects were tested using the Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity (PONS; Rosenthal, Hall, DiMatteo, Rogers, & Archer, 1979). Comparisons were made between PONS scores and the subject's area of study, length of time in the program, gender and age. Results showed that …

Differences In Values And Goals Of Occupational Therapy Students, Margaret A. Danka Dec 1990

Differences In Values And Goals Of Occupational Therapy Students, Margaret A. Danka

Masters Theses

This study compared professional values and goals of three levels of occupational therapy students: (1) seniors in baccalaureate programs (n = 337), (2) students in professional master's programs (n = 95), and (3) students in post-professional master's programs (n = 62). Demographic characteristics and factors influencing career choice were also examined.

Significant differences were found among the three student groups for three professional goals: (1) contributing to theory, (2) doing research, and (3) educating occupational therapy students, and four professional values: (1) intellectual stimulation, (2) exciting life, (3) comfortable life, and (4) helpfulness. The demographic differences among the three student …

Kinematic Considerations Of Elite Alpine Slalom Ski Racers, David Andrew Goodwin Aug 1990

Kinematic Considerations Of Elite Alpine Slalom Ski Racers, David Andrew Goodwin

Masters Theses

This study described specific kinematic parameters associated with success on the international level in alpine slalom ski racing. Sixteen male athletes representing twelve countries comprised the subject pool. Subject selection was based on finish position in the men's special slalom at the 1989 World Alpine Ski Championships in Vail, Colorado. Cinematographical records were analyzed by a method known as direct linear transformation.

The findings of the study indicated that: (a) hip and knee joint angles of the turning leg must approximate 1.80 to 1.83 radians and 1.82 to 2.21 radians, respectively, for efficiency in this turn; (b) a decrease in …

The Effects Of Aerobic Conditioning Upon The Resting Metabolic Rate, Marti R. Davis Jun 1990

The Effects Of Aerobic Conditioning Upon The Resting Metabolic Rate, Marti R. Davis

Masters Theses

This study com pared the metabolic rate following an exercise bout to the resting metabolic rate (RM R) established in pretesting procedures for twelve college age females. The only factor differentiating the groups was length o f the training period (one week, two weeks, four weeks, and five weeks). Training took place on a Bosch cycle ergometer three times a week, for 30 minutes each session, at 70 to 85 percent o f the subjects' heart rate reserve (HRR). Breath analysis was measured on a Beckman Metabolic Cart in both pretesting and post-testing procedures.

The findings indicated that aerobic exercise, …

Determinants Of 2000 Meter Rowing Ergometer Performance, Jeff C. Young May 1990

Determinants Of 2000 Meter Rowing Ergometer Performance, Jeff C. Young

Dissertations and Theses

Lean body weight and aerobic and anaerobic factors have long been recognized as important determinants of performance in the 2000 meter (M) race distance for rowing. Current research with noninvasive techniques has important implications for training and performance but is inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between a 2000 M rowing ergometer performance test (PT) and lean body weight (LBW), velocity at heart rate deflection (Vd), and anaerobic capacity (AC) in experienced rowers. Vd was used as an estimate of aerobic function. Thirteen trained male rowers (mean age 38.5 ± 8 years) were studied. Hydrostatic …

A Comparison Of Smoking Cessation Methods In Normal Smokers And Smokers With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Mary Beth Mueller May 1990

A Comparison Of Smoking Cessation Methods In Normal Smokers And Smokers With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Mary Beth Mueller

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

This research was designed to investigate whether there would be a difference in mean exhaled carbon monoxide levels and mean number of cigarettes smoked for two randomized groups of smokers.Smoking cessation therapy was manipulated in smokers with a chronic, productive cough (COPD) and those who were asymptomatic (normal). Individual therapy was compared to self-help therapy. The main purpose of this study was an attempt to define the smoking cessation therapy that worked best for each of these two groups. With the information gained from this research, it was hoped that educating different types of smokers (those with and without lung disease) about …

The Importance Of Physical Fitness: Physical Fitness Standards And Fitness Program Implementation, Ronald Gene Aaron May 1990

The Importance Of Physical Fitness: Physical Fitness Standards And Fitness Program Implementation, Ronald Gene Aaron

Graduate Theses

Due to the nature of law enforcement work, a large majority of an officer's time on the job is spent doing sedentary tasks. As a consequence, personnel develop a sedentary lifestyle which minimizes physical readiness and maximizes health risks. This paper examines the relationship existing between the over-all fitness level of a law enforcement agency and costs associated with absenteeism, major illnesses and civil liability, and suggests the need for a fitness program to be implemented at the Midland Police Department.

Global Decisions: A Curriculum For Enrichment In Health Education Using Kohlberg's Discussion Of Moral Dilemmas, Leanne Bond Lacey Jan 1990

Global Decisions: A Curriculum For Enrichment In Health Education Using Kohlberg's Discussion Of Moral Dilemmas, Leanne Bond Lacey

All Graduate Projects

Using Lawrence Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development and Discussion of Moral Dilemmas, an enrichment curriculum was created for use in the senior high school Health Education classroom or the Gifted Education classroom. The student is first introduced to the six stages of moral development as outlined by Kohlberg's theory. The instructional theories of Taba, Simon and Raths are also integrated with Kohlberg's theory through both individual and group discussion activities. First, the student solves one of eighteen Health Education-related moral dilemmas. After solving the dilemmas, the student asks questions of the others in a group discussion setting, and is in …

Prediction Of Maximal Oxygen Consumption In Boys, Ages 11 To 14 Years: An Investigation Of Field Measurements For Use In Schools, Loran D. Erdmann Jan 1990

Prediction Of Maximal Oxygen Consumption In Boys, Ages 11 To 14 Years: An Investigation Of Field Measurements For Use In Schools, Loran D. Erdmann

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated the prediction of maximal oxygen consumption in boys, ages 11 to 14 years, from a shuttle walk protocol and other field measurements appropriate to use in school settings. Maximal oxygen consumption was determined in 67 subjects using a treadmill protocol (M = 52.3 ml·kg-1·min-1, SD = 8.4). Subjects performed an 800-yard shuttle walk as fast as possible on a 20-yard course, with elapsed time recorded. Telemetrically measured postwalk heart rate, height, weight, sum of triceps and subscapular skinfold measurements, body mass index, and exercise frequency were also considered as predictors. Multiple …
