It showed its effectiveness in a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest-follow-up-control group design. The new program was based on the principle of psychoeducation and consisted of three 90-min sessions, to teach dental students how to better deal with their stress symptoms and to reduce their general stress level. Two instruments were used to assess the level of stress of the dental students, namely the Dental …

Focus Of The New Journal Health Professions Education, Henk Schmidt Dec 2015

Focus Of The New Journal Health Professions Education, Henk Schmidt

Health Professions Education

Why is there a need for a new journal in the field of health professions education? The simple answer is that the field is expanding. The number of academics and educators interested in understanding what works in health professions education and why, increases. Existing journals turn down up to 90% of submissions and offer little opportunity for young researchers and educators to master the craft of scientific publishing in close interaction with experienced reviewers. Health Professions Education will therefore offer more extended editorial support to young researchers than is possible for existing journals. We encourage beginning authors to start submitting …

Background: The usual scenario for change management in the medical education field is an academic institution creating a patient care facility. The opposite change is however rather rare and challenging. There is not much in the medical education literature on experiences of change management that provides sufficient support to readers who are involved in such process of change. Methods: We analyzed the experience of a clinical institution that has changed into an academic one. The methods used were archival analysis and interviews with those involved. The raw data were analyzed using a framework derived from the change management literature. Results: …

Background: The purpose of this article was to review the literature on lecture effectiveness and to suggest avenues for improvements. Methods: Selective literature review with an emphasis on active learning in the classroom setting. Results: Conventional lectures are effective only to a limited extent in attaining important curriculum objectives. They do not promote critical thinking; student attendance tends to be low and so is cognitive engagement; furthermore, the idea that lectures should and can cover all essential subject matter is false. Moreover, empirical literature on what students actually learn from lectures is lacking. A most fundamental problem of lectures is …

Research Advances In Conformity To Peer Pressure: A Negative Side Effect Of Medical Education, Tanya Beran Dec 2015

Research Advances In Conformity To Peer Pressure: A Negative Side Effect Of Medical Education, Tanya Beran

Health Professions Education

Curricula in medical education are intended to impart the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students will require as physicians to meet patient needs. There are additional unarticulated and implicit messages that inherently emerge in medical education. This paper examines one such message: conformity to peers, whereby individuals repeat inaccurate information reported by peer group members. Empirical evidence from 60 years of social-psychological research demonstrates that this phenomenon of conformity occurs across experimental tasks, cultures, and over time. It has yet to be systematically studied in medical education. Emerging studies from the University of Calgary, Canada, and in collaboration with King …

Self-Explanation, An Instructional Strategy To Foster Clinical Reasoning In Medical Students, Martine Chamberland, Sílvia Mamede

Health Professions Education

Clinical reasoning is a critical and complex skill that medical students have to develop in the course of their training. Although research on medical expertise has successfully examined the different components of that skill, designing educational interventions that support the development of clinical reasoning in students remains a challenge for medical educators. The theory of medical expertise describes how students' medical knowledge develops and is progressively restructured during their training and in particular through clinical exposure to patient problems. Instructional strategies to foster students’ learning from practice with clinical cases are scarce. This article describes the use of self-explanation as …

From Assessment Cocktail To Assessment Symphony: The Development Of Best Assessment Practices, Hanan M. Al-Kadri Dec 2015

From Assessment Cocktail To Assessment Symphony: The Development Of Best Assessment Practices, Hanan M. Al-Kadri

Health Professions Education

Introduction of the best possible assessment practices is a requirement for any institution seeking to foster excellence in its students. Assessment practices have been assumed to drive students' learning. However the extent of which this driving role of assessment negatively or positively influences attainment of curriculum objectives and educational outcomes is not well known. In an effort to improve assessment practices, assessment has moved from an era of strict implementation of assessment of learning and a dominance of the psychometric theory into a focus on assessment for learning. In the latter view, a cocktail of assessments is proposed to enhance …

We gathered case examples across England that had involved patient leaders in using patient and carer feedback to improve experience of care. A Patient Leaders Expert Advisory Group selected four case examples that were visited to undertake a more detailed study and subsequently discussed and agreed the key learning points and conclusions. …

Healthcare Student Immunizations: An Overview, Douglas Gardenhire Oct 2015

Healthcare Student Immunizations: An Overview, Douglas Gardenhire

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

All clinical healthcare programs (CHP) in the United States require documentation of many types of immunizations and health information. The key for CHP personnel is to determine if immunization and health information is valid or if immunity exists. Documentation alone does not guarantee a student will be protected. This document will review common immunization and health information collected by many CHP and provide recommendations that programs may consider when adopting or changing polices on student immunization and health information.

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to introduce readers to three educational perspectives: progressive, critical, and professional, and explain their relevance to allied health professional education. Method: An overview of three educational perspectives is provided, as is a discussion of their relevance to allied health professional education, using physical therapist education as an example. Creating A Healthier Campus: A Report On The Effectiveness Of Nsu’S “Slimming With The Sharks” Wellness Program, Corey Peacock, Tobin Silver, Pradeep Vanguri

Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship

With a recent increase in college obesity rates, it is imperative to assess the effectiveness of campus-wide fitness programs while encouraging other institutes of higher education to do so. It is presently uncertain whether these programs are advantageous or disadvantageous for improving campus-wide obesity rates; therefore, assessing campus-wide fitness programs and reporting results may bring awareness to college campus obesity rates and clarify a solution to the problem. NSU’s RecPlex offered “Slimming with the Sharks,” a structured, multiple-component, weight loss initiative available to all students, faculty, and staff. The following is a brief report of “Slimming with the Sharks” data …

A Healthy Dose Of Race? White Students’ And Teachers’ Unintentional Brushes With Whiteness, Samantha Schulz, Jennifer Fane Jan 2015

A Healthy Dose Of Race? White Students’ And Teachers’ Unintentional Brushes With Whiteness, Samantha Schulz, Jennifer Fane

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper reports on efforts by three Australian academics to develop students’ sociocultural awareness (in particular, their racial literacy) during a time of mounting pressure on teacher educators to narrow and standardise their approaches. The field of health education provides a vehicle for research; however, it is not the paper’s central foci. Of key concern is the development of a critical disposition in students – a disposition geared toward teaching for social equity. Learning of this nature transcends topic domains, and therefore allows for collaboration between academics in different parts of teacher education. Specifically, the paper focuses upon ‘whiteness’ and …

Collaboration In Delivering The Adventist Health Message In China: A Single Case Study, James Wu

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"the Adventist health message has been shared in many different ways by various institutions of the church. However, rarely is there collaboration across multiple organizations. This article describes how hospitals, universities and church entities worked together to reach the community with healthy lifestyle options. Basically the collaboration worked through four foundational activities: sharing of resources, training of health workers, operating lifestyle centers, and using the existing union governance structure. the collaboration provided outreach services in the following ways: lifestyle programs, wellness expo, health and gospel evangelism, mass media, and cooperation with NGOs."
