Nova, 1998-99 Fall-Winter, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

To "bring the best minds in the world to IMSA," the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy launched its Great Minds Program in the Fall of 1998. Leading the program is Nobel Laureate Dr. Leon Lederman, a "founding father of IMSA."

This story is the first in a series to appear in upcoming NOVAs, charting the development of the program and its impact on IMSA students and staff, and other students and teachers in Illinois.

We are pleased to share with you the 1997-98 annual report of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. In 1993, two decades after the 1972 U.S. Office of Education Report on the status of gifted and talented programs (the Marland Report), U. S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley issued a report stating that gifted education is essential to our nation’s future and documenting the “quiet risk” faced by gifted children and gifted education programs in the United States.
