The study examined the creation of an organizational culture at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The study focused on the concept of change and the effects of change on the organization and the organizational participants since the creation of the Academy in 1985. Changes in the structure and management of the Academy provided the basis for participant response.

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is a public, three-year, residential school for students from the State of Illinois who are highly gifted in mathematics and science. Selected students enter having completed the ninth grade. The rigorous comprehensive curriculum, with strong …

Leon N. Lederman, Illinois' first science adviser, worries about "the glaze." It coats the eyes of politicians when scientific subjects come up. The glaze might not be so important if it weren't for the fact that crucial policy issues involving science and technology are everywhere: global climate change, solid waste disposal, high-speed rail transit and stimulation of the advanced technology industry — to name just a few.

In many ways, the 1989-90 school year at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy can best be described as a year of re-creation. Having successfully met the challenges of the start-up years (1986-1989), our fourth school year became a time for thoughtful reflection, refocus and renewal. Within the context of strategic planning, we began to examine our values and beliefs, to clarify our mission and aspirations, and to develop bold, innovative strategies for achieving our institutional objectives.

Governor James R. Thompson and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Dr. Leon M. Lederman were honored at the formal dedication of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy on December 14. During the ceremony the Academy was dedicated to the People of Illinois in their honor.
