This article examines the complexity of cooperative learning as an instructional strategy and discusses its positive effects for all students. Perspectives in Gifted Education

This is the second in a series of monographs funded by the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation through the Institute for the Development of Gifted Education at the University of Denver. The first monograph contained different perspectives on the growth and development of young gifted children. This monograph addresses the characteristics and needs of twice-exceptional students. These are students who are both gifted and have some type of disabling condition. These students constitute a major group of underserved gifted children as their gifts often mask their disabilities, or their disabilities mask their gifts.

Searching for a cure for cancer in the heart of a cell, analyzing the ecology of Illinois tall grass prairies, engineering Illinois products to precise specifications, or volunteering to help others, IMSA graduates contribute in myriad ways.

The vignettes offer an in-depth look at several graduates, and the snapshots provide some more glimpses. Women tell how the IMSA experience enabled them to develop confidence to meet academic and personal challenges, succeed in a rigorous academic environment, and grow with the many opportunities IMSA made available.

Academically gifted students exist in every classroom and in all segments of the population. Rather than ignore their gifts and assume that a pull-out program for gifted students will satisfy their educational needs, schools need to accept the fact that gifted students are gifted all day, every day. Intellectually gifted young adolescents are prisoners of time in the classroom. Most of the material covered in a regular classroom is review or aimed at lower cognitive ability students.
