SURGE
As I have gotten older, I have learned that no matter how hard I try, I am never going to be able to repay my mother for everything that she did for me. The blood, sweat, and tears she put into nurturing the sick and troublesome, five-year-old me, the rebellious and lazy fifteen-year-old me, and the clumsy, and sometimes lost me now, are insurmountable. I know she had more trouble raising me than she was supposed to. I know her first five years of being a mother did not include taking me to the park, sitting down on a park …
Rhetoric As Inquiry: Personal Writing And Academic Success In The English Classroom, Erica E. Rogers
Rhetoric As Inquiry: Personal Writing And Academic Success In The English Classroom, Erica E. Rogers
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Holistic and critical pedagogy, an approach to learning and teaching, integrates the everyday realities students live, with the systemic and institutional objectives of education itself. Working with theories from composition, rhetoric, feminist studies, and cognitive psychology from a teacher-researcher perspective, this dissertation explores and theorizes holistic, critical pedagogy within the composition classroom while outlining the use of personal writing as a means to develop critical consciousness. Student study participants kept “Inquiry Notebooks,” semester-long personal writing projects that served as receptacles for practical and theoretical engagement with a variety of texts and ideas, then interviewed after the course to discuss their …

Patent Law, Copyright Law, And The Girl Germs Effect, Ann Bartow
Patent Law, Copyright Law, And The Girl Germs Effect, Ann Bartow
Law Faculty Scholarship
[Excerpt] "Inventors pursue patents and authors receive copyrights.
No special education is required for either endeavor, and nothing
precludes a person from being both an author and an inventor.
Inventors working on patentable industrial projects geared
toward commercial exploitation tend to be scientists or engineers.
Authors, with the exception of those writing computer code, tend
to be educated or trained in the creative arts, such as visual art,
performance art, music, dance, acting, creative writing, film
making, and architectural drawing. There is a well-warranted
societal supposition that most of the inventors of patentable
inventions are male. Assumptions about the genders …

The Impact Of Volunteering At A Girls Outreach Activity On Community Formation, Donna C. Llewellyn, Janet Callahan, Amy J. Moll, Catherine Rose Bates
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper is focused on exploring the motivation for volunteering at an engineering outreach activity. The outreach activity itself involved a two day, overnight experience for 9th and 10th grade girls that started in 2005, and which has been held annually since that time. The outreach event takes place in Boise, Idaho, and at the time of its onset was the only outreach or camp activity in the state focused on girls or young women. Across ten years, 510 total girls have participated, with approximately 85% of them coming from the immediate metropolitan area. The program was developed with a …

Is A Mediocre Female Professor Evaluated More Negatively Than A Mediocre Male Professor?, Stephanie M. Besst, Rebecca A. Humbert
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
Prior research has shown differences in student's evaluations of male and female professors. This study was designed to examine if these gender differences occurred in mediocre professors. Participants read a mediocre female or male candidate's teaching philosophy and an evaluation by a colleague. They were then asked to evaluate the candidate. The materials were identical except for the gender of the candidate. It was predicted that mediocre female candidates would be punished to a greater extent than mediocre male candidates. No significant results were found - possibly due to a floor effect.

11. Gender And Leadership, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy
CORE
The purpose of the Gender & Leadership module is for students to develop an understanding of the role gender plays in contemporary society and the relationship between gender and leadership. The objectives of this module are for students to be able to to define gender vernacular and differentiate between terms, dissect how gender roles were constructed, and identify the role of gender biases in leadership. To meet these objectives, case studies concerning the traditional feminine and masculine leadership roles are conducted to make students aware of their subconscious gender biases. Additionally, the terms sex, gender, gender expression, and gender fluidity …

Development Of A Questionnaire To Identify Barriers And Facilitators To Academic Careers For Women In Stem, Charles Leonard Bolton Iii
Development Of A Questionnaire To Identify Barriers And Facilitators To Academic Careers For Women In Stem, Charles Leonard Bolton Iii
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this research was to develop a questionnaire to be used to identify barriers and facilitators to women faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) academics. The phenomenon known as the leaky pipeline, a theoretical model describing why women are underrepresented in STEM disciplines, was examined. Women have long been underrepresented in STEM professions despite an increase in the number of women earning STEM degrees, suggesting women are faced with barriers that prevent them from achieving equal representation with men. The literature has identified several potential barriers, both historical and new, such as biological inequalities, family responsibilities, …

Research Brief: "Out From The Shadows: Female Student Veterans And Help-Seeking", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This study explored what happened when female veterans brought three military-cultural contexts (responsibility, worth, and pride) into their transition to civilian life and help-seeking attitudes in college. In practice, student veterans exhibiting components of military culture should use these military cultural components to their benefit, and student veterans struggling to adjust to the type of thinking often required of college students should feel comfortable seeking support at their university student veteran center. In policy, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) might continue offering their campus toolkit, which has been found to be a great resource for many IHEs, offering them …
