School district boards of education and administrators need to constantly gather information about the attitudes and opinions of the community they serve if the true educational needs of the community are to be served. Total community consensus or opinion is preferable, but often impractical. Casual information gathered from self-selected individuals from the community is readily available, but unrepresentative and often misleading. Surveys of a selected sample of the school community can be inexpensive, practical and accurate depending on the method of information collection, the nature of the questions and the manner in which the sample is selected.

Communication with the public is an essential facet of any school-community relations program. This study examines both external and internal communication methods. Before a school district can have a purposeful school-community relations program, the internal communication of the school personnel needs to be working effectively.

The survey used for this field experience was developed by the writer to determine the effectiveness of the Casey School District's school-community relations program. This telephone survey consists of eleven questions concerning an awareness of school news. One hundred people were randomly called and asked to respond to the survey.

This field experience took place during the 1981-82 school year at Centralia High School in Centralia, Illinois. The researcher served as the Director of Guidance and was responsible for scheduling 1,350 students into classes for the 1982-83 school year. The field experience started in December of 1981 and was completed in August of 1982. Computer scheduling was the method chosen to schedule the 1,350 high school students into 165 courses.

The purpose of the internship was to gain a better understanding of elementary school administration and gain experiences as a building level administrator in an elementary school. The purpose of the study was to execute a study of how the Charleston Community Unit District #1 was affected by the severe financial problems it faced from 1975 to present.

The study shows how a basic program of academic and extracurricular offerings were maintained while trying to solve the financial problems. There is information in the study to show how the financial debt was identified and what solutions were attempted to eliminate the debt.
