Examining The Implementation Of Functional Behavior Assessments And Behavior Intervention Plans, Vedia Page
Examining The Implementation Of Functional Behavior Assessments And Behavior Intervention Plans, Vedia Page
Scholar Week 2016 - present
There is a need to understand and improve the skills of school staff regarding functional behavior assessments (FBAs) and behavior intervention plans (BIPs). Students who exhibit problematic behaviors are at risk for negative outcomes in school and in adulthood. Students with emotional disabilities, African American students, and male students have the most risk. The purpose of this study was to explore teachers’ and administrators’ skills and knowledge as they relate to developing and implementing FBAs and BIPs and to identify training needs in this area. The study may be of interest to school staff and others seeking to provide behavioral …
The Implications Of Action Research For Literacy Instruction, Kathi Lippert, Cassie Bailey
The Implications Of Action Research For Literacy Instruction, Kathi Lippert, Cassie Bailey
Faculty Scholarship – Education
Action research is an ongoing, cyclical process in which the teacher has the autonomy and authority to make significant change in his or her classroom. The word research, however, may intimidate the novice researcher. It is important to remember that action research is not as formal as traditional research as it is conducted for a shorter duration, allows for more flexibility, and usually includes qualitative and quantitative data. This type of research enables the practitioner to make effective changes in literacy instruction. In action research, reflections drive inquiry, and the results of which, positive or negative, fosters insight into the …
New Teacher And Mentor Contact: An Examination Of Type, Frequency, And Duration, Tiffany R. Lowery
New Teacher And Mentor Contact: An Examination Of Type, Frequency, And Duration, Tiffany R. Lowery
Ed.D. Dissertations
This study focused on three aspects of a new teacher mentor program in a Midwestern elementary school district. The researcher sought to determine whether the type, frequency, and duration of contact between new teachers and their mentors affected the overall usefulness of the mentor program. Within the study, the following types of contact were included on the survey tool: face-to-face contact, email, observation, or other. Frequency was measured by the number of days per month that the new teacher met with the mentor. Duration was measured by the amount of time, in minutes, spent in face-to-face conversation with the mentor. …
Library Selection: The Role Of Newbery Winning Titles In Today's Libraries, Erin J. Kennell
Library Selection: The Role Of Newbery Winning Titles In Today's Libraries, Erin J. Kennell
Honors Program Projects
The goal of this research project was to determine if the role of Newbery winning titles in today’s libraries is changing, or if those titles are still held above other titles because they won the prestigious Newbery Award. To answer this question, preliminary research was compiled and a survey was sent to librarians in the state of Illinois. The finding of the research showed that, while many librarians still considered Newbery award winning titles to be a worthwhile contribution to their libraries, there were some who were beginning to question the award and the titles that were chosen. One of …
Classroom Factors, Student Engagement, And Self-Motivation In Reading, Anna M. Carlson
Classroom Factors, Student Engagement, And Self-Motivation In Reading, Anna M. Carlson
Honors Program Projects
The goal of this research was to determine how teachers most effectively produce engaged, self-motivated readers. The answer to this question was determined by preliminary research and survey results from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers. Based on the findings of the preliminary research, the following hypothesis was formed:
It is predicted that there is a relationship between implementing the following factors in the classroom and producing engaged, self-motivated readers:
- 1. Providing time in class for independent reading
- 2. Providing an appropriate environment for reading
- 3. Allowing students to select books according to their interests …
The Impact Of Experience On Elementary School Teacher Affective Relationship With Mathematics, John Salzer
The Impact Of Experience On Elementary School Teacher Affective Relationship With Mathematics, John Salzer
Ed.D. Dissertations
This study was designed as an exploratory examination of the impact of teaching experience on elementary school teachers’ affective relationships with mathematics. A self-reporting survey was used to examine a wide variety of experience factors, including factors related to quantity of experience, type of experience, and post-certification training opportunities (n = 275). Participants were also asked to identify services that might impact their affective relationships with mathematics. This study resulted in recommendations for seven follow-up studies to gain insight into factors that significantly correlated to teacher attitudes toward math or to their perceived changes in attitudes over time. Recommended practices …

The Traveling Science Circus: Developing Pre-K Geoscience Educators Through Public Outreach Opportunities, Priscilla Field Skalac
Faculty Scholarship – Geology
As members of the university’s student chapter of the National Science Teachers Association [NSTA], undergraduate teacher candidates with a specific interest in science education have developed a public outreach group: the Traveling Science Circus. Upon request, volunteers from the NSTA chapter provide science learning activities to a variety of groups at no cost.

Relevance First: How To Engage Preservice Elementary (K-8) Teacher Candidates In A Required Geoscience Course, Priscilla Field Skalac
Faculty Scholarship – Geology
Many preservice elementary teacher candidates enter the required science content classroom with poor self-efficacy attitudes. We should take an approach that will both lead our students towards an understanding of the relevance of the content, as well as self-confidence in their ability to teach geoscience. In one of four required science content courses, Earth and Space Science for Elementary Teachers, we are achieving positive outcomes by redefining our students as our apprentices.
