The purpose of this study was to present data concerning the relationship between 8 factors and spelling achievement. The 8 factors considered in this study were: visual discrimination, auditory discrimination, knowledge of phonics, reading comprehension, student attitude, sex, socioeconomic status, and handwriting.

There were 20 good spellers and 20 poor spellers chosen from the sixth grade students attending Hardin Middle School, St. Charles, Missouri. The commercial tests and measurements administered were: Spelling Subtest, Stanford Achievement Test; Test of Visual Motor Integration; Test of Auditory Discrimination; Word Attack Subtest, Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests; and Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test. "Centering on Marine Animals for Elementary School Children" was a multi-curricular learning center design in four parts. It consisted of an introduction on Bubbles the Whale, including a picture, a puppet, a song, a Sea Script, and task cards. Following the introduction were three units on Sea Monsters of the World, the Migration of the Grey Whale, and the Ecology of the Southern Sea Otter. Each unit contained a picture of the sea animal, a puppet, a song, a Sea Script, a Quiz, map(s), and task cards.

A Videotape Presentation Of The Positive Learning Environment At Peter G. Schmidt Elementary School, Donna Hass Mellander

Schools have needed to keep constituents informed about the effectiveness of the formal learning environment. This videotape, entitled, "A Tour Through The Sunshine School", facilitated that communication. Candid scenes highlighted students and staff involved in basic and enrichment programs at Peter G. Schmidt Elementary School. Selected literature was reviewed. Videotape technicians were consulted and production procedures were listed. The Tumwater School Board of Directors, teachers, students and community members viewed the tape and made it available for future showings. A bibliography of selected literature was included.

The purpose of this project is to provide assistance to the elementary math teacher in meeting the needs of the student gifted in the area of math. A collection of activities is provided to use with gifted intermediate students and should serve as an example of the type of activities appropriate for the gifted student. These activities would be most appropriately used with gifted students in grades four through six. The specific area and focus of this project will be that of arranging District and program math learning objectives for eventual computer banking along with materials cross-referenced to those objectives. In addition, the cross-referenced materials will be labeled as to grade level, interest level, mode of learning, and time needed for their use. This project was developed to provide an orderly plan for the introduction of microcomputers into the total curriculum. A computer curriculum was developed that became a vibrant part of the total experience at the elementary level. The uniqueness of an elementary curriculum has been the manner in which each subject area complemented the other. Science, for example, has not been taught as an independent content area. It has been taught as an extension of the reading program. Also computer instruction must be blended with the other disciplines.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this field study was to develop a school effectiveness model which may be implemented at Washington Elementary School in Centralia, Illinois. In 1980 this researcher was named principal at Washington Elementary School. At the same time Centralia City Schools were entering a desegregation program which included bussing. For the first time there were more than three minority students at Washington Elementary School. More than half the students at the school are from economically disadvantaged families and achievement had been low for many years. Thus, this study was deemed timely and relevant.
