With the growing push for increased time spent on STEM in classrooms, visual arts often fall to the wayside. Even rarer is the opportunity to practice teaching visual art lessons in a dedicated elementary art classroom. This project describes the process of developing art curriculum for fifth grade students, based on course work in ART 380 Educating the Child and using Washington State Visual Arts standards and corresponding assessment. The purpose of this action research project was to gain insight into students’ social-emotional learning and the impact of general music class on it. The researcher utilized a dependent samples T-test with four sections of third-grade students gathering data with a check-in and check-out form on their emotional zone, using Kuypers, L. (2022) Zones of Regulation. The researcher is a general music teacher (transitional kindergarten through fifth grade) in her nineteenth year of teaching. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study is to understand how teachers use HeidiSongs music as an instructional tool in the elementary school classroom. HeidiSongs uses multisensory structured language education to teach by engaging multiple senses simultaneously to increase retention. The theories guiding this study include Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, which involves kinesthetic intelligences among other types of intelligences, and Krashen’s theory of second language acquisition. HeidiSongs uses both musical and kinesthetic activities to enhance literacy.
