Could The Inclusion Of Certain Building Information And Modelling Aspects Into The Leaving Certificate Engineering Syllabus, Aid The Transition Of Students Into Third Level Education, When Choosing A Course Within The Construction Industry, Joseph Boyle, Deborah M. Brennan

Capstone Reports

The paper investigates the effects of implementing several Building Information and Modelling (BIM) aspects into the Leaving Certificate Engineering Syllabus and examines the impact this has on students choosing third level Architectural Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry courses with the desire of improving the shortage in the sector. The method and content of the study was based on academic research on second level education in other European countries through the lens of a Literature Review. A sixteen-week pilot program was trialed with over one hundred students at Senior Cycle. The outcomes of the study were critically evaluated through stakeholder interviews …

Mechanical Engineering

This document will describe the development of a solution for enforcing the topics covered in the ME 329 - Mechanical System Design curriculum by bringing quality equipment to a classroom setting. The project Sponsor, Professor Lauren Cooper, has also noticed a lack of hands-on experience for many students entering this class. Our team is attempting to develop a solution for this problem.

To better understand what students would want to learn, or would have liked to learn more about, we conducted surveys of past, present, and future students as well as conducted interviews with professors that have taught the course. …

Measuring Metacognitive Awareness: Applying Multiple, Triangulated, And Mixed-Methods Approaches For An Encompassing Measure Of Metacognitive Awareness, Andrew J. Hughes Jan 2019

Measuring Metacognitive Awareness: Applying Multiple, Triangulated, And Mixed-Methods Approaches For An Encompassing Measure Of Metacognitive Awareness, Andrew J. Hughes

Educational Leadership & Technology Faculty Publications

The article provides an overview of the quantitative analysis of teachers’ metacognitive awareness. The purpose of the overview is to express the need for encompassing measures of metacognition for improving metacognitive awareness in the field of technology and engineering education. The data presented come from using the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory to measure technology and engineering teachers’ metacognitive awareness at the end of 2 specific professional development (PD) programs. The study had a sample size of 21. Participants were combined into 3 groups based on their participation in the PD programs. Group 1 consisted of teachers that actively participated in the …

The Semantic Student: Using Knowledge Modeling Activities To Enhance Enquiry-Based Group Learning In Engineering Education, Paul Stacey Oct 2018

The Semantic Student: Using Knowledge Modeling Activities To Enhance Enquiry-Based Group Learning In Engineering Education, Paul Stacey

Conference papers

This paper argues that training engineering students in basic knowledge modeling techniques, using linked data principles, and semantic Web tools – within an enquiry-based group learning environment – enables them to enhance their domain knowledge, and their meta-cognitive skills. Knowledge modeling skills are in keeping with the principles of Universal Design for instruction. Learners are empowered with the regulation of cognition as they become more aware of their own development. This semantic student approach was trialed with a group of 3rd year Computer Engineering Students taking a module on computer architecture. An enquiry-based group learning activity was developed to help …
