This quasi-experimental study investigated the effect of participation in an afterschool makerspace program on middle school students' academic achievement, grades, and school attendance. An experimental group of 237 sixth-eighth grade students participated in an afterschool makerspace program during the 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 school years. A control group was selected using stratified random sampling of students from the same schools, grades, and special education designation who did not participate. Specifically, whether years of music learning experience, type of music learning experience, or type of multimedia were associated with task scores and task duration in a non-music discipline. The study revealed the transferable benefits of music learning experience to learning outcomes in other disciplines. Chatbots are artificial intelligence programs designed to mirror human conversation via text or speech and have quickly been integrated in medicine, including genomics and genetic counseling. Much of the literature has primarily focused on participants' experiences and attitudes on the use of chatbots, with limited knowledge surrounding the perspectives and opinions of providers. Geisinger and Invitae co-developed a HIPAA-compliant prenatal pre-visit educational chatbot that provides routine patient education on genetic principles and genetic tests that are performed during the first and second trimester of pregnancy. “Gamification has been used in a variety of contexts including education. In order to understand the effects of gamification in education, a meta-analysis was conducted. A bottom-up approach was used to analyze the effects of game design elements on learning outcomes found in the literature search. The result suggests that gamification can enhance student learning outcomes. Elements such as points, leaderboards, competitions, progress bars, feedback, and collaboration have medium to large effect sizes.
