Using Online Resources To Foster Autonomous Learning In A Clil Context: A Case Study Of An Advanced Chinese Class, Xiao Zeng

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

The role of online resources has become increasingly significant in content and language integrated Chinese courses in terms of material preparation and autonomous learning task design. The study examines a case of integrating online visual resources into an advanced Chinese newspaper and journalism class and discusses how online resources can be utilized to foster student autonomy and promote self-regulated learning. Specifically, the study demonstrates the key features of a video platform (Pear Video) and editing tool (Interphoto), and shows how the task arrangement takes advantage of the resources in enhancing students’ language and content skills. The analysis of the learning …

Analysis Of Educational Eportfolio Use And Discussion On Its Implementation In Chinese Teaching, Peng Zhang, Rui Yang

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

Numerous studies have explored e-portfolio implementation research in-depth; it has grown in popularity and become widespread. This study conducted a comprehensive review of the current secondary literature on the use of e-portfolios in education in order to narrow down the considerable volume of research, develop new knowledge, and further offer implications in Chinese teaching. This study synthesized the secondary articles from 2011 to 2021 and analyzed the retrieved data using the SWOT framework. A keyword search for e-portfolio and reviews generated 636 review articles. These papers were then scrutinized to see whether they fit the criteria, and 12 review articles …

Creating And Applying Artificial Intelligence Teaching Materials For Online Courses: Review Of Student Teacher Skills When Teaching Chinese As A Foreign Language, Qiao-Yu Warren Cai

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

With artificial intelligence (AI) technology rapidly developing, the way in which humans learn is undergoing considerable change. The breakout of COVID-19 at the end of 2019 accelerated the pace with which people use AI technology for various tasks. The issue of e-materials to teach Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL) motivates the research of a one-group pretest-post-test design along with pre-experimental work: this in turn examines the online ability of student teachers working with TCFL. Findings show that the basic/proficient/expert technology, pedagogy, and evaluation of online TCFL ability (operating teaching software within narrow AI functions, producing teaching materials and applying …

Enhancing Grammar Learning With A Multimedia Instructional Module: Design And Teaching Of “Shì…De” Construction For Cfl Learners, Shenglan Zhang

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

This pilot study examined the effectiveness and students’ perceptions of a multimedia module on intermediate Chinese-as-a-Foreign-Language (CFL) learners’ understanding and use of the “shì…de” construction. The module was designed based on the First Principles of Instruction (Morrill, 2002) and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (Mayer, 2009; 2014). It provided a systematic and comprehensive approach to teaching the “shì…de” construction, one of the most challenging grammar points in CFL. Twenty-two CFL learners participated in this mixed-methods pilot study. Data were collected using pre- and post-tests, a survey, think-alouds, and semi-structured interviews. Findings show that after using the module, …

Using Technology-Supported Enrichment Activities To Extend Student Learning In A Chinese As A Foreign Language Classroom, Lih-Ching Chen Wang, Xiongyi Liu, I-Hsin Lee

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether exposing middle school students to content above their ability level produced significant differences in students’ confidence in their Chinese as a foreign language competence in each of the following four areas: reading, listening, speaking, and learning vocabulary. Participants (N = 30) were sixth and seventh graders. Results of paired t-test analyses indicated that there was no significant difference in student confidence in Chinese reading competence, t(30) = 0.78, p = 0.22; in Chinese speaking competence, t(30) = -0.50, p = 0.31; or to learn Chinese vocabulary, t(30) = …

Techniques And Methods Change, Methodology Remains The Same: Web Technology Use As Cosmetic Change In Cfl Classrooms, Justin Olmanson, Xianquan Liu, Nannan Wang, Christopher Heselton

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

Technology has been a staple in the language classroom for more than fifty years. From audio cassettes, to video tapes, to multimedia CD-ROMs, to static and interactive web technologies, language teachers have taken the time to learn these tools and integrate them into the classroom experience. Each new technology, each new app, creates an opportunity to alter the experience of teaching and learning—often supporting increased authentic interactions with the Chinese language. This potential however can go unrealized when the ways the technologies are used align with more traditional grammar and vocabulary-focused teaching methodologies and promote efficiency over communication. In this …
