The Wrong Side, Laura Zucca-Scott

This poem is an interpretive poetic transcription describing the experience of a young immigrant child. Being on the “wrong side” becomes a symbolic representation of an internal and external conflict between different ways to know. Schools are not always a safe place for children whose lives have been uprooted unless teachers become advocates and allies.

This poem is an interpretive poetic transcription inspired by conversations I had with several children and adolescents from immigrant families. In teacher education programs, we often feel pressured to formalize curricula in a way that is oblivious to our students’ needs. Both our teacher candidates and their future students deserve more and better.

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated social and economic disruptions, resulting in cascading effects on the health and well-being of global citizens. However, little research has focused on how COVID-19 has affected rural regions, despite rurality being a critical factor for understanding community impact and response to the pandemic. Purpose: The demands of athletic training students are substantial between academic and clinical responsibilities creating problems with commitment and retention. Grit and growth mindset have been associated with academic achievement and success; however, little research has assessed the presence of grit and growth mindset within athletic training students. STEM Month

At Sandshore School, STEM is infused in students’ week through the engagement of challenges and project based learning activities created and planned by our media specialist. For students, these hands-on learning activities allow time for students to collaborate with peers, express their individual ideas, learn through trial and error, and critically think using problem solving skills. Students thrive in this type of learning environment while learning skills to build self-esteem, confidence and communication. STEM education is not only engaging for all types of learners, it also provides students with real life skills targeted for success.
