Investigating Bifactor Models And Fit Indices For Unidimensionality: An Illustration With Method Effects Due To Item Wording, Elizabeth A. Leighton Oct 2022

Investigating Bifactor Models And Fit Indices For Unidimensionality: An Illustration With Method Effects Due To Item Wording, Elizabeth A. Leighton

Theses and Dissertations

The use of unidimensional scales that contain both positively and negatively worded items is common in both the educational and psychological fields. However, dimensionality investigations of these instruments often lead to a rejection of the theorized unidimensional model in favor of multidimensional structures, leaving researchers at odds for how best to treat their data. One modeling technique that has gained attention in recent years related to item wording effects is the bifactor model, which specifies a general construct that explains the covariation among all items, and two method factors that explain additional covariation among items with similar wording.

Recent applications …

First-Generation Support: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Understanding Imposter Phenomenon And University Belongingness, Julia Kathryn Hodge Oct 2022

First-Generation Support: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Understanding Imposter Phenomenon And University Belongingness, Julia Kathryn Hodge

Theses and Dissertations

This longitudinal mixed-methods study examines first-generation students (FGS) from a new angle, using the lens of the imposter phenomenon (IP) and the impact of a support program tailored to this population. The Opportunity Scholars Program (OSP) serves low-income, first-generation in-state students. The program promotes retention for low-income FGS. It is worthwhile to evaluate whether and to what degree such a program affects IP among FGS. At the beginning and end of the fall semester, 99 OSP first-generation students, general FGS, and non-FGS completed surveys on imposter phenomenon, academic self-efficacy, and test anxiety. Following the quantitative measures, 12 first-generation students participated …

Disproportionate Discipline: Race/Ethnic And Gender Disparities In Rates Of Lunch Detentions And Subjectivity In Teachers’ Reasons For Those Punishments, Paul Michael Fram Jul 2022

Disproportionate Discipline: Race/Ethnic And Gender Disparities In Rates Of Lunch Detentions And Subjectivity In Teachers’ Reasons For Those Punishments, Paul Michael Fram

Theses and Dissertations

The intent of school discipline policies, practices, and procedures is to shape student behavior to create an optimal learning environment for all students. However, school discipline falls short of this goal because it is rife with race/ethnic and gender disparities. These disparities contribute to inequitable academic and life outcomes that plague, in particular, African American children. This dissertation addresses these disparities through a thematic literature review, a quantitative analysis of inequities in rates of lunch detention, and a mixed methods analysis of subjectivity in reasons for lunch detention.

The literature review explains the problematic aspects of school discipline, the racial …

Faculty Perspectives On Assessment And Placement: A Mixed Methods Study Of The Social Validity Of Placement Tests, Multiple Measures Placement, And Guided Self-Placement, Dawn R. Coleman Jul 2022

Faculty Perspectives On Assessment And Placement: A Mixed Methods Study Of The Social Validity Of Placement Tests, Multiple Measures Placement, And Guided Self-Placement, Dawn R. Coleman

Theses and Dissertations

Community colleges are under ongoing pressure to increase the success of students placed into developmental courses; while many reforms focus on the length of course sequences, there is also attention on how students are assessed and placed. Studies of these assessment and placement (A&P) methods focus primarily on predictive validity; one aspect of validity that is neglected is social validity, which assesses the extent to which the goals, procedures, and effects of an intervention are socially desirable.

The purpose of this study was to use a social validity framework to explore the perspectives of community college math and English faculty …

An Examination Of Attachment And Aspirations In Diverse Rural Youth: The Role Of Peers And Teachers, Gresi Bonomo Irdam Jul 2022

An Examination Of Attachment And Aspirations In Diverse Rural Youth: The Role Of Peers And Teachers, Gresi Bonomo Irdam

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three studies that examined diverse rural youths’ educational and rural aspirations. These studies have the potential to inform rural communities, educators, and parents by providing novel understandings of how peers and teachers in mathematics and science classrooms influence diverse rural youths’ rural attachment, and aspirations (i.e., educational, rural residential, community, and proximity). Thus, the purpose of this dissertation was to investigate rural teachers and their diverse students from White, African American, Hispanic, and Native American backgrounds. In particular, the studies within this dissertation examine how teachers’ social connectedness to their rural communities relates to their teacher …

Investigating Performance Of Model Fit Indices In Multiple-Group Confirmatory Factor Analysis: Complications With Ordinal Data, Ning Jiang Jul 2022

Investigating Performance Of Model Fit Indices In Multiple-Group Confirmatory Factor Analysis: Complications With Ordinal Data, Ning Jiang

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of three commonly used model fit indices when measurement invariance is tested in the context of multiple-group CFA with categorical-ordered data. As applied researchers are increasingly aware of the importance of testing measurement invariance, as well as Likert-type scales are frequently used in the social and behavioral sciences, specific guidelines are in need for establishing measurement invariance using model fit indices.

To achieve the study goal, two Monte Carlo simulation studies were conducted. Study 1 investigated the sampling variability of fit indices under different levels of invariance tests. Based on …

Null Hypothesis Statistical Testing: A Survey Of The History, Critiques, And Alternative Methodologies, Bradley David Rogers Jul 2022

Null Hypothesis Statistical Testing: A Survey Of The History, Critiques, And Alternative Methodologies, Bradley David Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

Considered normative from the second half of the 20th century (Danziger, 1990), null hypothesis statistical testing (NHST) has received consistent, largely unheeded criticism. Critiques have received more attention in recent years with the recognition of the replication crisis in the social sciences and the American Statistical Society’s statement and special issue on p values (Wasserstein & Lazar, 2016; Wasserstein et al., 2019). This paper seeks to provide a framework for understanding the issue by looking at the history of NHST and investigating some alternatives to the methodology. A brief review of the history, spread, and critiques of NHST is provided …

High School Students’ Math And Science Motivation Profiles: Stability And Relationship With Their Stem Career Aspirations, Jiali Zheng Apr 2022

High School Students’ Math And Science Motivation Profiles: Stability And Relationship With Their Stem Career Aspirations, Jiali Zheng

Theses and Dissertations

Motivation to study mathematics and science is an important influencing factor of career aspirations in STEM fields which predicts STEM major choice in college and STEM careers after graduation. Using restricted data from a nationally representative sample HSLS:09, the current study identified U.S. high school students’ motivation profiles in mathematics and science courses in 9th and 11th grade, examined the stability of these profiles across the two time points, and studied the association between 11th grade motivation profiles and STEM career aspirations. Differences between male and female students in motivation profiles, profile stability and career aspirations were …
