Past research has established that concerns about being negatively stereotyped can impact the academic performance of marginalized groups. These stereotype threat effects may be moderated by external factors (i.e., role models, social support) and internal factors (i.e., identity, resilience). We integrate these approaches to promote success within STEM-interested children, particularly young girls. Specifically, we propose a practical toolkit that can be used in elementary schools as a theory-driven holistic intervention for mitigating stereotype threats.

In-service K-12 educators working in urban schools experience higher rates of secondhand trauma that result in teacher burnout and turnover. Existent literature is replete with the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences and traumatic events in student populations, physiological and educational effects of trauma, and trauma-informed practices in schools. Nevertheless, teachers lack adequate training and resources to engage in trauma-informed teaching. It is critical for teacher preparation programs to engage teacher candidates in acquiring foundational knowledge and skills to be competent in trauma-informed teaching practices. In this poster …

Campus Community School is a 300-student charter school in Dover, DE, which serves children in grades 1 through 8. As a new charter school the founders have had the opportunity to build our ideal school, from designing a constructivist project-based curriculum, to implementing site based management, and focusing heavily on parent participation. This essay illustrates how well the charter school model can work. As the administrator and one of the founding members of CCS, I describe our challenges and hurdles as well as successes.
