The purpose of this study was to investigate scorer reliability of the Discomfort-Relief Quotient (DRQ) method of scoring applied to the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT). A second aim was to investigate some of the interrelationships between Tension, as measured by DRQ, and (1) Grade Point Averages, (2) Number of Quarters spent at CWCE, (3) Practice Teaching Ratings, and (4) First-Year Teaching success.

It is felt that the bilingual population in the southwest is of significantly large enough proportions to warrant specialized emphasis on its education problems. These children need to become better comprehensive readers, not merely word-callers. Teachers frequently assume that if their pupils recognize the words of selection, comprehension is assured. Unfortunately, this is not true in many instances. There are many aspects of English language which might cause bilingual children some difficulty. For the purpose of this experiment the problem was defined as follows: graduate students at CWCE consist, in the main, of public school teachers and administrators. Their scores in the Cooperative English Test ranked them in the lower third compared with college seniors in representative teachers’ colleges in this country. It was determined that a means should be devised to find out if these test results were acceptable as conclusive evidence of ability.
