This study examined students’ active engagement in the context of aligned curriculum and instruction. In conjunction with Biggs’ (2003) notion of constructive alignment, the ten principles of engagement suggested by Krause (2005) informed the redesign of an undergraduate course, which was delivered fully online and had a work-based learning component. The results of the present study strongly suggest that the course redesign has lead to significantly increased student engagement and achievement of higher order outcomes. For decades, research has pointed to significant gaps between African American and White
student academic achievement. In this article, I critically discuss the literature on African
American student academic achievement from pedagogical, cultural, and sociolinguistic
perspectives. I then argue for a stronger linguistic and pedagogical approach to bridge the gap
and propose a curriculum idea that teachers may find useful should they decide to adopt this
approach.

An Assessment Of Treatment Integrity In Behavioral Intervention Studies Conducted With Persons With Mental Retardation, John J. Wheeler, Michael R. Mayton, Stacy L. Carter, Anthony L. Menendez, Ann Huang

The purpose of this study was to assess the degree to which behavioral intervention studies conducted with persons with mental retardation operationally defined the independent variables and evaluated and reported measures of treatment integrity. The study expands the previous work in this area reported by Gresham, Gansle, and Noell (1993) and Wheeler, Baggett, Fox, and Blevins (2006) by providing an evaluation of empirical investigations published in multiple journals in the fields of applied behavior analysis and mental retardation from 1996 –2006. Results of the review indicated that relatively few of the studies fully reported data on treatment integrity.
