Teachers’ And Learners’ Attitudes Towards Critical Thinking Skills: A Case Study In The Iranian Efl Context, Masoud Mahmoodi-Shahrebabaki, Masoud Yaghoubi-Notash Oct 2015

Teachers’ And Learners’ Attitudes Towards Critical Thinking Skills: A Case Study In The Iranian Efl Context, Masoud Mahmoodi-Shahrebabaki, Masoud Yaghoubi-Notash

masoud mahmoodi-shahrebabaki

Modern and forward-looking approaches to education and learning no longer treat learners as passive recipients of knowledge. Rather, they claim to nurture self-monitored and selfdisciplined thinkers who are shown to be academically successful and promising. This qualitative case study aimed at exploring the teachers’ and learners’ attitudes towards critical thinking within the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context of Iran. To this end, the attitudes of eighty Iranian EFL learners and their teacher towards inclusion of critical thinking exercises into their regular syllabus were gauged. The results obtained from 18 unstructured interviews indicated that teacher’s and learners’ responses were …

El Curso De Práctica Profesional En La Facultad De Derecho De La Universidad De Buenos Aires. Crítica A Una Formación Práctica Segmentada., Luciano Antico Jul 2015

El Curso De Práctica Profesional En La Facultad De Derecho De La Universidad De Buenos Aires. Crítica A Una Formación Práctica Segmentada., Luciano Antico

Luciano Antico

Involvement Of Undergraduate Students In Research: A Comparison Of Course Research Components, Paid Research Activities, Student-Led Projects And Independent / Directed Study Courses, Jeremy Straub Apr 2015

Involvement Of Undergraduate Students In Research: A Comparison Of Course Research Components, Paid Research Activities, Student-Led Projects And Independent / Directed Study Courses, Jeremy Straub

Jeremy Straub

Involving undergraduate students in bona fide research can provide multiple types of benefits. Whether students elect to pursue research careers or not, research experiences can be beneficial. Students gain an excellent resume item and interview discussion topic. They also gain experience in team participation dynamics and project management and the opportunity to put techniques that they have learned in the classroom to use. In interdisciplinary projects, they learn to work with those from other disciplines, gain an understanding of the challenges of doing so and gain an understanding of the vernacular of these other disciplines.

This paper presents an overview …

Students' Knowledge And Perceived Confidence In An Interdisciplinary Experiential-Learning Environment, Lee J. Florea, Adam J. Kuban, Michelle O'Malley Apr 2015

Students' Knowledge And Perceived Confidence In An Interdisciplinary Experiential-Learning Environment, Lee J. Florea, Adam J. Kuban, Michelle O'Malley

Lee J Florea, PhD, P.G.

Experiential-learning theory suggests that students acquire knowledge through hands-on learning environments, and aspiring journalists need a setting where they can experience science — its process(es) as well as how to report empirical findings. Researchers utilized pre/post questionnaires, field-notebook evaluation, and focus-group analysis as methods to assess an interdisciplinary, experiential course that combined science and media undergraduates. Results revealed students valued procedural over fact-based knowledge. Students also indicated increased perceived confidence—even when they answered questions incorrectly.

Student Perspectives Of Service Learning With Older Adults, Karen Brown, Carol Bashford Apr 2015

Student Perspectives Of Service Learning With Older Adults, Karen Brown, Carol Bashford

Karen Brown

The presenters will describe the findings of a mixed-methods research study designed to explore students’ perspectives of skills and knowledge gained through engaging with older adults with physical and/or cognitive limitations living in a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). Participants in the study included students enrolled as juniors and seniors in a baccalaureate nursing program. Community partnerships with several CCRCs provided the opportunities for students to interact with elders. During the service-learning course, students developed and implemented evidence-based health promotion activities directed towards enhancing the elders’ cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functioning. Additionally, students were paired, one-to-one, with an elder-partner in …

Speed Dating In History: Fostering Critical Thinking, Patricia L. Rieman Mar 2015

Speed Dating In History: Fostering Critical Thinking, Patricia L. Rieman

Patricia L Rieman

When students role-play, their learning is personalized (Joyce & Calhoun, 2014). Add the challenge of finding compatible partners, and students are fully engaged as they infer the connections between themselves and their “dates”. Mix in the final element of limiting the opportunity to interact with potentially compatible partners, and students must quickly determine importance, synthesize, and then verbalize the details of their personas. Additionally, students must analyze their partner’s message to identify connections to their own, infer hidden identities, and describe their cognitive processes. In this session on using speed-dating to teach history, all of these actions come together to …

Success In These Schools? Visual Counternarratives Of Young Men Of Color And Urban High Schools They Attend, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D. Jan 2015

Success In These Schools? Visual Counternarratives Of Young Men Of Color And Urban High Schools They Attend, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

The overwhelming majority of published scholarship on urban high schools in the United States focuses on problems of inadequacy, instability, underperformance, and violence. Similarly, across all schooling contexts, most of what has been written about young men of color continually reinforces deficit narratives about their educational possibility. Taken together, images of Black and Latino male students in inner-city schools often manufacture dark, hopeless visualizations of imperiled youth and educational environments. Using photographic data from a study of 325 college-bound juniors and seniors attending 40 public New York City high schools, this article counterbalances one-sided mischaracterizations of young men of color …

Enhance Alphabet Knowledge, Ana Paz Jan 2015

Enhance Alphabet Knowledge, Ana Paz

Ana Paz

Providing a child the opportunity to succeed in school is a main worry of parents and teachers. When children are able to connect letters with their corresponding sounds allows for literacy to grow. Using Enhanced Alphabet Knowledge (EAK) instruction will allow children to evolve their literacy skills by connecting. Connecting alphabet knowledge in four year old children can allow for pre-reading skills to emerge early. By focusing on daily enhanced alphabet knowledge lessons children will be able to connect upper case letters and lower case letters with their corresponding sounds. Children will also have the ability in identifying print-awareness.

The Voice Of The Child In The Early Childhood Education Research In Australia And New Zealand: A Systematic Review, Qilong Zhang Dr.

Qilong Zhang Dr.

This literature review covers journal articles reporting early childhood education (ECE) research in Australia and New Zealand in the past 10 years and it has found that: (1) Nearly half of the articles lacked child-related data with an explicit or implied justification, while less than one-tenth failed to include child-related data with no justification; (2) Over one-third of the articles addressed the voice of the child, while less than one-tenth included child-related data for assessment purpose. A typology of the voice of the child has evolved from the review and it includes: pseudo voice (engendered by assessing the child), inferred …

Assessing Public Relations Student Learning And Performance In Real World Client Campaigns And Projects, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr Oct 2014

Assessing Public Relations Student Learning And Performance In Real World Client Campaigns And Projects, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

Extensive research affirms the benefits of engaging public relations undergraduates in campaigns and projects for real world clients. At the same time, instructors often have difficulty evaluating student learning and performance in such work, for three reasons: (1.) In order for the work to truly be real world, instructors must allow students a high level of autonomy. (2.) Clients are often poor judges of appropriate public relations practice. (3.) Students often hesitate to inform instructors of strategic challenges or team member negligence or malfeasance. This poster session presents a brief overview of assessment concepts affirming why it is important to …

A Raspberry Pi-Based 3d Scanner, Cam Peterson, Pann Ajjimaporn, Jiaoni Wang, Jeremy Straub, Scott Kerlin

Jeremy Straub

This poster presents work on building a 3d scanner. A 3d scanner is a device that analyzes a real-world object to collect data on its shape and or appearance. The collected data can then be used to construct digital 3d models. The scanner is made up of 50 Raspberry Pi computer boards and cameras. We will construct 12 arms each holding four cameras per arm. The purpose of this is to be able to scan anything and produce a 3d model that we then would be able to send to the 3d printer or use in a video game or …

James LeFager

The Mobile Learning Initiative (MoLI) works with faculty members on exploring and designing mobile solutions. A communications faculty member contacted our Mobile Learning Initiative (MoLI) group to explore using a mobile solution for a class activity where students would be able upload images, text, and audio from around the city and display it on a map where others could search and filter the results. Using Google Fusion Tables we were able to setup a method for students to add content, including images, addresses, and details regarding the location that could be filtered and viewed on a Google map. We worked …

La Virtualización Universitaria En América Latina, Claudio Rama Dr Jan 2014

La Virtualización Universitaria En América Latina, Claudio Rama Dr

Claudio Rama Vitale (Dr. ED; Dr. DER)

This article analyses the process by which higher education in Latin America is being digitalised, and how it is radically

changing the educational dynamics in the region. The incorporation of digital technology implies a transformation of traditional distance education and the creation of new distance education dynamics. Indeed, some institutions are now offering fully online programmes, and there is a general increase in the digitalisation of face-to-face teaching. This study analyses the state of the art of the educational changes brought about by educational digitalisation in Latin America, and characterises the various aspects of it. It also describes the slow …

The Development Of Operating Software For An Open Small Spacecraft, Donovan Torgerson, Christoffer Korvald, Jeremy Straub, Joshua Berk

Jeremy Straub

The OpenOrbiter program aims to design and demonstrate the Open Prototype for Educational NanoSats (OPEN) framework. OPEN reduces small spacecraft development costs by making the design plans freely available to any institution that wishes to use them. OpenOrbiter will demonstrate the viability of this design via being launched into low-Earth orbit (LEO).

This poster presents the initial design work for the Operating Software for the OpenOrbiter spacecraft. Operating software efficiency is extremely important due to the limited level of communication with ground-based operators and limited onboard power production. The operating software performs task scheduling, constraint compliance management, and schedule optimization …

Transitioning To English-Only In A University Intensive English Program: A Phenomenological Study, Alan Broomhead Jan 2013

Transitioning To English-Only In A University Intensive English Program: A Phenomenological Study, Alan Broomhead

Alan Broomhead

This qualitative research study investigated how students in university English as a Second Language (ESL) programs experience the transition to English-only methodology. When students move from English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts, where the first language is usually integral to teaching and learning, to university English as a second language (ESL) programs in the U.S., they may encounter a significant difference in the approach to teaching, an approach which excludes reference to their first language and obliges them to use only English. While the question of the first language (L1) in second language teaching and learning has been explored …
