In higher education, pivoting quickly to a fully virtual experience online in the midst of a global pandemic is an adventure. There are marked differences between the online experience for a student who was already in a web-delivered course versus one that started face-to-face and quickly pivoted to an online setting. Some assignments, lessons, and courses are easily delivered in alternate formats while other learning opportunities are much more difficult to transition for online delivery. For example, assignments that involve internships or in-person experiences had to shift dramatically, be delayed, or cancelled. Beyond the experiences within the higher education classroom, …

Educators are amongst a population at risk for exposure to secondary trauma because they have contact with young adults who may have or currently experiencing hardships such as mental health issues, relationship abuse, or financial insecurity. However, despite the vulnerability of educators to secondary trauma, little research has focused on this population or preventative techniques that might mitigate the effects of secondary trauma to educators. A faculty cohort was selected to identify levels of exposure and coping strategies used to navigate classroom and one and one interactions with students. In this presentation participants the results from this semester long faculty …

Universities and colleges are facing a variety of threats that impede traditional policy and decision-making. Institutional silos sometimes make collaboration and cohesion very difficult (Hanover Research, 2014, p. 20; Kelderman, 2016; Lederman, 2013). As institutions lose funding and political capital while struggling to collaborate, new policies and ways of thinking must be explored and implemented (Lederman, 2013). The goal of this article is to demonstrate that a policy of broader thinking is one method that can aid higher educational leaders in finding solutions; broader thinking is operationalized by finding ways to decrease wasteful spending by avoiding common pitfalls, using common …

Graduate students from a southern state were surveyed to analyze their motivations for pursuing a degree in educational administration. The researchers also examined whether there were differences in the reported motivations based on race. According to NCES (2003-2004) only 10.6% of all public school principals were African American while 16.8% of the students they served were of the same race. Understanding that African Americans are underrepresented in school leadership positions as compared to their Caucasian counterparts, the researchers sought to explore whether Caucasians were encouraged to pursue school leadership credentials more often than African Americans. Statistical analysis revealed no significance …

Individual Differences In Digital Badging: Do Learner Characteristics Matter?, Joey R. Fanfarelli, Thomas Rudy Mcdaniel

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Badge use has rapidly expanded in recent years and has benefited a variety of applications. However, a large portion of the research has applied a binary useful or not useful approach to badging. Few studies examine the characteristics of the user and the impact of those characteristics on the effectiveness of the badging system. This study takes preliminary steps toward that cause, examining the effectiveness of a badging system across two web-based university courses in relation to the individual differences of the learners. Individual differences are examined through the lens of Long-Dziuban reactive behavior types and traits. Results revealed differences …

Although Principal Francis’ motivation to pilot a technology-infused curriculum program is laudable in his eyes and has garnered Superintendent Garcia’s support, he has clearly made several critical leadership mistakes obtaining loyalty from his own leaders at Dayton High School. Ramifications for this error will surface in many ways and it will span time, however, if handled wisely at this juncture, the current situation can be transformed positively and still result in accomplishing his ultimate desired outcome of piloting the new technology-infused curriculum program.

International Need For Youth Philanthropy., Daniel Eadens

There is no doubt that spending adequate time during the school day on improving reading, science, and math skills with curriculum designed to increase performance on high stakes assessments, is supremely important in this age of accountability. While the emphasis with many schools in the United States this decade has maintained a laser-like focus on quickly increasing academic improvement, required by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001, not all of the youth in America have forgotten that there are other areas of importance, including social and emotional growth and basic humanity. If our students are to become …

As a beginning, the Principal needs to immediately devise a comprehensive, fast acting plan, in close conjunction with the school’s leadership, and present it to the Superintendent, who may or may not agree with the plan. Having a plan is better than approaching the Superintendent without a plan even though the district likely already has their own plans. However, because the clock is ticking, time is of the essence with regards to student safety and legal compliance.
