The purpose of the project was to develop a workshop to provide on the job training for aides in secondary special education programs in Bremerton, Washington. A needs assessment was conducted to determine the validity of the perceived need and to identify and prioritize training areas. Existing training programs were examined and a literature search conducted. The resulting training model was designed to increase the effectiveness of aides and thereby maximize the delivery of instruction in special education.

An in-service program for secondary teachers to increase understanding of the learning disabled student's response to learning style was developed. The in-service was organized into five 2 hour weekly sessions. The program format includes a participant agenda, and a presenter's guide with objectives and instructions for each instructional activity. Characteristics of the learning disabled student, the Dunn and Dunn applied model of student learning style, and two learning style materials development sessions were included in the in-service program.

The total leadership program at Cashmere High School was evaluated and a detailed outline and explanation of its' program was established. The evaluation provided Cashmere with a realistic view of its' entire leadership environment and the study resulted in a leadership structure guideline by which any secondary school could develop a positive leadership program.

A series of 28 reading comprehension strategies was developed to assist students in using and understanding the first aid textbook in a ninth grade Standard First Aid and Personal Safety class. The strategies included lessons at the literal, interpretive, and applied levels of reading comprehension and were developed to further facilitate students' reading the text with more depth and proficiency.

A syllabus of 65 enrichment activities was developed to accompany the third grade Addison Wesley science text. The activities were designed to aid children in transferring study skills, context clues, comprehension and vocabulary from reading instruction to content material. Objectives and teaching strategies were developed to accompany each of 26 skills. Suggested vocabulary activities and materials were included. Each of the activities focused on helping students to transfer necessary study skills, context clues, and comprehension skills to the science text in order to improve their proficiency to read and use the text effectively.

A handbook was designed to be used by parents of Specific Learning Disability (SLD) children in the Moses Lake School District. Using material from the literature and questions from parents of SLD children as a guide, advice and recommended activities were developed for the handbook. Parents were enthusiastic about the activities and indicated a desire for more information. It was concluded that parents using the handbook could be more effective in helping their SLD child.

A handbook has been developed to be used as a supplement to the basal reader with learning centers teaching language experience, and the fundamental skills of reading and writing, The centers were prepared to involve the children in their own learning, to teach the student to read and write the vocabulary he uses in everyday speech, and to allow the low achiever to feel successful.

This project was undertaken to determine if the use of supplemental audiovisual materials would benefit identified remedial seventh grade science pupils. Two experimental groups of remedial pupils were presented various amounts of supplemental audiovisual materials. Both groups were then compared to a control group of remedial pupils receiving no experimental treatment. The results showed support for the hypothesis that there would be no significant difference in learning when supplemental audiovisual materials were used.

A family budget simulation was designed and field-tested using pretest and posttest comparisons of fifty-six students and posttest only comparisons of one hundred sixty-three students to measure student achievement. The results showed substantial pretest to posttest gains but no significant differences in posttest only averages between students using the simulation and those not using the simulation. Recommendations for improving the design and application of the simulation are discussed.

The problems encountered by gifted students when integrating into the regular self-contained classroom were studied. Parents and peers display their misunderstanding of gifted students by their innocent remarks that adversely affect them. Teachers unwittingly cause discomfort by the unchallenging tasks gifted children are expected to perform. Sixty children from the Wenatchee School District's Gifted Pull-out Program were asked to share some of their concerns pertaining to these problems. Based upon their responses and a survey of the literature, a handbook was compiled to help prevent parents, teachers and peers from misunderstanding the gifted student.

This project organized and catalogued all of the supplemental reading materials of an elementary reading room according to a reading skills code list. The code list was developed by consulting reading skills lists and the school district's student learning objectives. Fifteen major skill areas were included in the code list. Each was broken down into subskills which were assigned code numbers. Each supplemental material was examined and catalogued under the appropriate code number. A handbook was compiled which explained the system and listed all of the materials by skill area.

The home language acquisition skills notebook was developed to aid parents in giving appropriate language stimulation and activities for their child's level of development, four to six years of age. In addition, positive home teaching techniques, positive home language hints, and a mini-language library bibliography are also available to guide the parent in appropriate home language intervention. Although the notebook will be used with language delayed children first, it is designed to be used with all children in the Lake Chelan Elementary Kindergarten in an attempt to stimulate better language skills, both receptive and expressive.

This project developed an educational program for parents of children in the lower economic classes. The program consisted of a series of workshops for parents to help them enrich the prereading background of their preschool and primary-grade children. The major emphasis was to acquaint parents with children's literature and with the importance of their role in the reading development of their children.

The Project Palatisha Developmental Checklist (PPDC) is a preschool screening instrument that is used by many different tribal Head Start programs throughout the western United States. An item analysis was made on the Cognitive, Fine Motor, and Language subtests of the PPDC. The sample population consisted of 202 children ages 3 through 5 who were enrolled in Head Start programs. The Head Start programs who participated were located on the Hualapai, Hopi, Salt River Pima-Maricopa, Makah, Quileute, Chehalis, and Yakima Indian Reservations.
